t7920 CPU 1 (2nd CPU) High Temperature

Dear All,

My t7920 has 2 x 6140 xeon gold cpus installed.

The workstation has Linux (Mint 20.04) installed and I can montior cpu temperatures using the 'sensors' command.

CPU 1 operates at approximate 20C hotter than CPU 0 and, under load, frequently reaches 96C.

I can reduce this by setting more aggressive thermal mangement in BIOS, but the subsequent increase in fan noise is very distracting. The fans and heatsinks are clean.

Is this temperature differential (20C) normal, or should I replace the thermal paste and/or heatsink of CPU1?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Kellerberrin.

I don't think that my writing is going to be relevant, since i don't have the same kind of unit.

But in all the dual cpu boxes I had over the time, the temperatures of each cpu were either identical, or had 1c of difference only. Personally i would put new thermal paste or a thermal pad (maybe).

This said, a question. Are you monitoring the LOAD of the 2 cpus ? I mean, just in case that for whatever the reason the os/software you are running is putting like a 100% load on the cores of cpu2 but only a partial load on cpu1. Don't think is the case but i would check the loads just to play safe
