Two Dell Precision T3400 Desktops Simultaneously Bricked

I have two identical Dell Precision T3400 Desktops that were solely used for running World Community Grid's OpenPandemics software.  They have Intel Q9550 processors and 8 GB RAM and were running Linux Mint and used 24/7 for OpenPandemics.  They ran without problems for about 3 weeks, then one day I found them turned off.  When I turn them on, I get a solid amber power light, full speed fan, no POST lights, no video, no beep.  Both have the same symptoms.

Some theories:

1. Power Surge {they are on a surge protector, with another system running fine on the same protector.  No recent lightning storms or signs of power problems on other devices].

2. Some strange worm that can brick a PC. [Behind a NAT router.  Basic firewall enabled.  Not doing anything but running OpenPandemics.]

3. A firmware update from Mint that failed.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Another theory:

4. The heavy workload from the OpenPandemics jobs caused over temperature and both CPUs fried. {Would they not throttle to protect themselves?]

This may be a late reply.  But some times, a messed up CMOS data can cause the exact symptoms that you have described.  Try clear the CMOS using the pin setting on the motherboard and retry booting up again.  Sometime you will have to give a few rounds, let the machine run a little longer even though it is not booting up, then shutdown and power on again..

I also have a few T3400s still running.  They are really solid built computer.

my guess would be a failed Mint update or a Dell BIOS update that failed on both. If you can get into the BIOS you could restore to an earlier BIOS Version?

If you are only using Surge Protection any power failure could trash your OS Surely your on UPS/Surge protection?

A long shot, but perhaps replace the CMOS batteries?
