BIOS has Secure Digital (SD) Card Boot! But it doesn't seem to work!

I've seen other messages about this, but they are not applicable -- mostly old, other about external USB adapter.

I have a Precision 7730 with the latest BIOS (1.12.1) and have enabled Secure Digital (SD) Card Boot in BIOS, but, even though I have a known good/bootable SD card in the SD card slot, the BIOS does not present it as an option in the "one-time boot menu" (F12). I've tried, among many things, with and w/o Enable Attempt Legacy Boot and with and w/o Legacy External Devices enabled.

If anyone has gotten this to work, please reply.

Dell, could you please verify 100% that this works with the 1.12.1 (and that I've simply missed the "trick" to get it to work

Thanks.

Hello Ron,

Is the SD card detected within the operating system? Is the same SD card booting fine on another known good system?

Yes, the SD card is detected within the OS.

And the system boots from it when it is in an external USB SD card reader.

I do not have another system which has an internal SD card reader/slot to verify that it boots. However, the same procedure I use to generate the card generates a bootable internal disk drive.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Can you 100% verify (i.e. have you personally seen) a Precision laptop w/ 1.12.1 BIOS can boot from an SD card in the built-in SD card reader slot?

Thanks.

I would request you to please give me 24 hours of time while I review this internally and update you with the next course of action.

Hello,

I am following up to check with you if reverting to previous version of BIOS makes any difference in boot via SD card?

I just tried downgrading to version 1.11.0 and it did not work either.

I would like to avoid doing the work of trying all the versions.

I thought you were going to try something... did you?

What did you find out from your internal review?

Thanks.

Thank you for trying the step suggested. We are still working to test this and would require some more time. Rest assured I shall get back to you as soon as I have an update.

I haven't heard from anyone from Dell yet.

In the meantime, I found a colleague with a Dell Precision M4800 and was able to boot from SD on that laptop. Since my Precision 7730 does not boot from an SD card which does boot in another Dell laptop, it seems that 1 of 2 possibilities exist:

1) BIOS bug

2) BIOS setting incorrect

The third possibility of some HW issue is unlikely because the cards read and write fine from the OS. The second possibility is unlikely because it seems pretty straight forward. However, I would appreciate it if someone could go over the settings with me including any possible incompatible setting or other gotcha's which might be causing the problem. Otherwise, I hope a BIOS fix happens soon.

Thanks.

Why has this issue not been resolved after over two years? Same issue with a Precision 7550. Come on, Dell, you can do better.

I Concur.

Now that FIVE years have passed since the initial problem report  of this issue, and Dell has exhausted all possibilities for a software fix (You have, haven't you, Dell? Huh?), it seems to me that it is time for everyone who has this issue to submit an escalation for it.

Since Dell does not know how to fix their own problem in software, they could solve the escalation with a simple, easy workaround: Ship an inexpensive SD card reader to every person who submits the escalation.  Easy workaround, easy close.  How about it Dell?  Since the problem was initially reported in early 2020,  it was fully within warranty for any machines sold at the time of that report!

If you will write me with the appropriate address, I will be happy to let you know where to ship my reader, and you may thank me for suggesting such an easy way for Dell to close this out once and for all!
