Dell Precision 3480 and Satechi TB4 dock

I use a Dell Precision 3480 equipped with 32GB of DDR5. I use a Satechi TB4 hub that offers 3x TB4 ports and 3x USB-1 ports operating at 10 gigabit. Satechi claims the USB-A ports are USB 3.2 but that aspect of the standard calls for 20 gigabit speeds. The TB4 ports are 40 gigabit which do handle TB4 class devices.

I use an assort of SD express and CF express cards so I gave the TB4 version of such cards so I can import data into my machine. I also have TB4 adapters for NVMe SSD etc.

I also have a USB-C hard disk enclosure but I find it runs at a measly 5 gigabit speed. USB enclosures for 2.5" devices all have USB-C connections but the 3.5" enclosures tend to be older logic and some have USB-B connections while more recent models like my Blueendless come with USB-C and it even has 3 extra ports as a basic hub.

My Dell has 2x USB-A and 2x USB-C ports. To call a 13th gen machine sluggish is more of a testament to Intel who cannot see past a USB stick. The USB-A ports are 5 gigabit.

The gripe is slow as molasses speeds with the USB4 ports. The performance is pathetic.

When transferring high-bandwidth media (CFexpress, SD Express, NVMe), slow performance through a Thunderbolt 4 hub is usually caused by PCIe tunneling overhead, dock driver issues, or Windows power policies. Thunderbolt hubs share the 40 Gbps pool among attached devices, which can cause severe bandwidth throttling if the controller gets overloaded.

I have looked into this more and evidently I had to make a registry change

Open the Registry Editor and navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USB.

If the registry key does not exist, creating a new DWORD value named DisableSelectiveSuspend and setting its value to 1 will force Windows to keep the ports fully powered at the system level.

A full system reboot is required to initialize these updated configurations and restore your baseline transfer speeds.
