Dell Precision 7560 display upgrade

Hi All,

Just got a used, nice spec machine DELL Precision 7560 (i9, RTX 3080) which came with a terrible washed out, 250 nit screen (it was awful), I did a Google search for users who have done upgrades like this on 7550 and 7560, it seems the general word is you have to be careful due to incompatibilites and most people go for OE 4k anyway.

So I have Arch Linux installed along with W11 and I asked ChatGPT and it said  it would be able to interogate the video system and UEFI to see what the 7560 could support, after about 30 minuets of copying and pasting comands to and from ChatGPT to the terminal ChatGPT said the 7560 would support the 2k (2560 x 1440) and high refresh which is what I wanted.  I needed the non-touch, UHD 4K RGB Camera display cable DELL P/N 094D5W (eBay) and 2k 240hz LG LP156QHG SP V1 this is a 400 nit, 16.7 million colour, 100% DCPIP-3 panel, evertyhing works 100% fine, brightness buttons, 240Hz, very bright, punchy display, very very happy with this.  Reason I had to change to the 4k cable is the pitch of the pins on the 2K display is 0.4mm and 4 lane eDP vs 2 lanes and 0.5mm on the old cable with with 30 pin anyway.

Is this a drop in solution or is it more involved? You mentioned command codes

Hi, yes there were codes and commands that had to be used to interogate the video subsystem in order to determine what it was cabable of, I then told ChatGPT what kind of display I wanted (2k high refresh with good color) and it said I needed the non-touch, UHD 4K RGB Camera display cable DELL P/N 094D5W (eBay) and 2k 240hz LG LP156QHG SP V1 display.

ChatGPT got it exactly right for my needs, brightness buttons work fine, 240Hz and goes from dim very bright and works perfectly.  So if 2k is what you want, this panel works great (BIOS looks normal, scales good etc) 4K would not have done it for me, eyes not good enough at my age.

Hope this helps you

@limsolo is it possible for you to share the chat log that you used? Does this apply for windows as well or just Linux?

Sorry chat log long gone to be honest once it worked I got rid of it, it simply was the following: me asking if ChatGPT knew how to interogate the video subsystem, EDID etc and and if a 2K screen would work, then it said use Linux of my choice (I already had Arch Linux installed, but a Linux Live ISO would have worked such as Debian, Mint, Ubuntu etc) there was then quite a bit of cutting and pasting of commands, and the command output, ChatGPT then said everything pointed to a few screen options I choose the best spec from Panel Look, and also ChatGP said a new 4 lane video cable would be needed (rather than the 2 lane the laptop had for the basic 1080 panel which was fitted) the extra two lanes carry the additional bandwidth needed for the higher resolution panel, when getting a cable you need to consider a couple of things as there are a few options for 7550 and 7560 1) Touch Screen or non Touch Screen 2) 4k or non 4K (you want 4K for anything more than 1080), 3) IR Webcam or non IR Webcam. Also with the 4K screen then Dell 4K screens use a smaller connector on the back of the display than usual 4K screens.  The LG 2K screen I bought used the same connector as the Dell 4K screen, if you choose something else then you would need an adapter from Ali Express to go from small connector on the cable to large connector on the screen, I don't like adpters etc, so one of the other reasons I choose the LG 2K was no messing around with adapters.  So you need if you want to repliacte my spec 1) LG 2K, 2) eDP cable for Dell 4K which the sub option of touch screen type yes/no, IR Webcam yes/no 3) screen securing tape strips (eBay or Ali Express).  Lastly I got the display cable for the 7550 has nobody had stock of the 7560, same cable, different number.  Yes works great with Windows 11
