Loudest Laptop Ever

DELL Precision 5540 Laptop

I had my Dell for about 4 years now. It has and keeps serving me decently. It is relatively fast but you do have to make sure you keep an eye on the data storage and occasionally make sure it is not overflowing, otherwise, the laptop will slow down as any other device.

I bought this computer with the intent of editing a lot of videos since I am attending a film school. For my purposes, it served me pretty well but it could have been better and I did not do nearly as much editing work as I thought I will. There were a few times where I needed to run Premier Pro, After Effects and Google all at the same time and the laptop would crash. Needless to say, I think for the $2000 I spent on this laptop I could have bought a smaller Macbook but it would have run better.

Another major issue I have faced with Dell Precision is that it is obnoxiously loud and that is the main reason why I want to switch to a Mackbook in future. It is so loud that I cannot properly use Zoom and have to use Google Meets instead. When I unmute myself on Zoom people say it sounds like an airplane engine starting and they cannot even hear other people talk. As you can imagine it is severely limiting in the age of Zoom classes and remote work. Even wearing headphones just lowers the volume of noise by just a little bit. With Google Meets the wave of embarrassment still engulfs me during the meetings, not as loud but I still prefer to keep myself muted. This is a small thing I did not think about when buying this laptop 4 years ago, however, it is a major inconvenience.

I even brought it to a repair place and asked them about the issue. They cleaned the computer’s inside of dust and put in new thermal gel but in the end, they said that that is just how the computer is. And it is not that I am running heavy programs on the computer all the time either. For some time I used to close everything down and only have one thing open like Zoom and the plane engines would still start and never stop. It even does it when it’s turned off, which I think it just bazaar.

In conclusion, there are much better and quieter laptops on the market than this one. Yes, it has served me decently, but if you are someone who uses online meeting platforms like Zoom, Google Meets and Teams at least somewhat regularly there are other laptops there for you. I honestly do regret buying this laptop because it does not live up to expectations and there are way better laptops on the market for even less than the cost of this one.

Will I ever buy Dell again? No, thank you. I will stick to my Macs.
