Precision 3551 fan noise
I recently bought a Precision 3551 with i7 10875H
The fan makes a lot of noise, even in idle state. Meanwhile the keyboard is still very hot on the left.
I’m using 130W USB-C charger and windows 10 is on idle with no CPU usage, and no launched application. I checked the CPU frequency and it is always at 4300 MHz even on idle.
Is there a way to lower the CPU frequency on idle ? such high frequency is no necessary all the time.
I tried all thermal modes in Dell Power Manager, and Optimized is the less terrible.
It will be a good idea to add a new set to Dell Power Manager : Slow, Cold and Silent

Almost the same here. The fan runs always with high rpm, even on idle. The CPU frequency never go under 1,8 Ghz at "Optimized". On "Silent" the CPU frequency go down to 0,8 Ghz but the performance is poor. Maybe there is a design or construction failure in the cooling system? We have 22 Dell Laptops in the company and I never ever had this kind of noise on an idle Laptop.

I have also the same problem. Too much noise without too much usage (cpu,ram,nothing). I have also turned off the turbo boost without any success. Still too much noise for a brand new powerfull dell laptop

I see processor frequency keeps jumping from 800 - 4500Mhz when idle (about 4% load). So my I guess that problem is in processor utilization driver or power management or Turbo Boost control.

That sounds possible. Dell has meanwhile replaced the mainboard and the fan. The problem is still there.

Hi,
I've the same problem with mine corei7, 32 GB ram .
Very noisy when conencted to my WD19TB dock but silent on battery.
After reading your posts, i've decided to launch again Dell command manager to rescan for new firmware updates.
For my case, silent mode was also very noisy. I've just done updates this afternoon and it seems to be better.
Fans seems to run slower in optimized mode than before and in silent mode;, systems is very ... Silent !!
I'll survey this system in next days.
I hope it'll be helpfull for you guys

The problem should be solved by installing the latest Thermal and Power Configuration Package from Dell's website, it was released on 2020-11-30

In cmd admin shell (windows 10)
powercfg /setacvalueindex scheme_current sub_processor PROCFREQMAX 2000
powercfg /setactive scheme_current
PROCFREQMAX 2000 limits the CPU to 2000 MHz (or whatever value you indicate). You can also monitor the cpu temperature with Core Temp sofware (it is free).
The PC is slower but becomes more silent.

The package suggested by @marekkoenig worked for me. Applying this update solved the constant fast/loud fan running. Dell should be including this installed by default.
