Precision 5530 AND Precision 5540 not charging over dock
I have a 5540 win10, a 5530 win10, a 5530 linux, a 5540 win11, and a 5560 linux.
I have seen all the other, unsolved, posts on this topic - hopefully I can add a little more info.
My Precision 5540 ( win10) stopped charging over the usb c dock quite awhile ago. Tried updating all the drivers for everything. None of my home docks would charge it either (in total tried 4 or 5). IT tried to talk to Dell, they gave us the runaround. Needs a new motherboard, weeks without laptop etc... Which weeks without my work pc is unacceptable.
I found the plug in AC first, then dock workaround to charge and said I could deal until he got it sorted. Well, it never got sorted and now the laptop is out of warranty.
A month or so later, my home 5530 (Windows 10) stops charging over any of the docks. Very suspicious. It's already out of warranty.
I suspect either Dell pushed out a FW update, or Windows pushed out an update which wrecks the USB C power negotiation for the USB chip on the MB, which is why it's a MB replacement.
Can we seriously not have a patch for that?
My Linux laptops are having no charging issues, and the 5540 with Win11 is not having any charging issues.
Now my 5530 with Windows has stopped recognizing *any* of the authentic, proper AC chargers and will not even slow charge that I have. Battery health allegedly fine per Dell diagnostics.
I have seen these unsolved posts also, and tried every driver uninstall, reset etc until the battery was too dead to do anything else.
Bad AC port you say? Well if I remove the battery and plug the adapter in, the laptop powers up fans and all! ...briefly. and then powers itself right back down. So bad port I think not. Bad power management chip or bad firmware or bios update which is breaking charge/power management? (Or intentional, planned obsolescence... Which is a different conversation 🤬), maybe.
Has anyone else had this or can someone explain the updates to me so I can roll back to a working version, or (ugh) try updating to win11 (apparently by charging a battery in ANOTHER laptop and swapping into the dead laptop....).
I am regretting a lot of PC buying decisions rn....
