Precision 5540 WiFi Adapter
Hi there, frustrated Desktop Support Specialist here. All the following laptops are running Windows 10
I haven't seen this specific issue reported anywhere yet. We have a batch of Precision 5540 laptops with i9 processors that are working fluidly.
However, the 2nd batch we got had Xeon processors strangely, and almost all of them are 'forgetting' they have WiFi cards installed. Our users are more frustrated than I.
The adapter does not appear in device manager, then randomly without any trigger the laptop will see its adapter and will automatically connect to wifi until the next instance of it forgetting it has a wifi card.
We've tried:
-Dell Command Update in its entirety
-Scanning for hardware changes in Device Manager
-Updating Wifi card driver via Device Manager
-Uninstalling and reinstalling wifi card driver from support.dell.com
-BIOS flashing (reverting to oldest versions, then testing each BIOS version 1by1 oldest to newest)
-Every time we change BIOS we ensure the WiFi adapter is enabled in the BIOS.
-Disconnecting and reconnecting the WiFi card physically after opening up the laptop
-Holding the power button for 30 seconds with the battery unplugged while the wificard is disconnected.
I don't know what else to do, as the card will sometimes appear in Device Manager and sometimes will not.
Any help is appreciated.

I'm encountering the same issue as Desktop Support for my organization. Have you found a solution since you initially posted?

I am facing this issue also. Seems like I can get the WiFi to come back on after entering the BIOS but once it shuts down it turns itself off again until entering the BIOS.looking for a solution.

Hi, Just curious, does this happen when it comes out of hibernate?
The wifi and bluetooth adapter is gone, as it it's not listed under the device manager?
And there's a USB Controller error?
Thanks.

Same here.
Everytime wake up from a hibernation, the WLAN device is gone, there is no Intel AX200 found in device manager. Even restarting doesn't find it back.
One nasty workaround is that I go to bios setting and modify any and save.
Looks like the BIOS was corrupted during hibernation hence windows cannot detect this device at all.

Although I can't believe, after down grade the BIOS to 1.6.0, the problem was fixed. What can I say?

This is now happening to me.
Any other solutions besides downgrading the BIOS?
I've tried rebooting, scanning for new network adapters, clicking the windows 10 "reset" network option (it rebooted after that).
None of the above actions has fixed the issue.

I work as desktop support and encountered this issue as well. I went into the BIOS and changed a setting that seems to have allowed for the machine to keep sensing the wireless card.
Go to Power Management -> Wireless Radio Control and enable 'Control WLAN radio' and 'Control WWAN radio' (I'm not sure which one worked but when I had both selected it seemed fine).
This will force it to check if the machine is plugged into the ethernet. If it does not detect an ethernet connection it will turn on the wireless card and begin searching for signals. When the ethernet is plugged in it will then disable the card, but the wireless option should still show up in the internet options.

I hope this helps. I did several restarts for the user's computer and I did not encounter any more issues with the wifi. I will update tomorrow if the user has issues again.

This fixed the issue on my machine. I don’t have a WAN so I just checked the WLAN, saved in BIOS, restarted and voila, magically got my WiFi back. Thank you to the guy who posted this response.

Hi,
I do not see the "Wireless Radio Control" option under "Power Management" in my BIOS settings.
What other mechanism is there to keep the WiFi card from shutting down?
Thanks.

@the4everclear thank you! Woke up to no WiFi today and this has solved the problem (so far) 4 years after your post.
