Precision 7530: 3.5 mm audio jack does not detect a headset plugged in
Hi everyone.
So, I was planning to Skype someone and plugged in my RHA m750i headset (with mic attached) into the 3.5 mm port on my Precision 7530.
Upon opening the sound control panel, I noticed that only the Microphone Array, i.e. the built-in microphone was working. The 3.5 mm Jack Mic was apparently 'unplugged', as seen by the notebook, despite the jack being fully and completely plugged in:
I've updated to the latest audio drivers from Dell: version 6.0.8838.1, A10. MaxxAudio is installed and working. I upgraded to BIOS 1.12.1 but promptly downgraded to 1.11 after losing brightness control with the integrated graphics switching option disabled. The rollback did not affect the updated microcode or Intel ME firmware. I am running Windows 10 Education 1909, build number 18363.535.
Another observation: audio out works perfectly through the earpieces on the headset. The mic is the only problem point.
I have also ruled out the headset itself, as the microphone works with smartphones and other computers; plus, I've plugged in other headsets and this problem has not disappeared.
Finally, there is another user at the NotebookReview forums who also noticed this problem.
What can I do? I am attempting, in the meantime, to determine if Linux can detect the jack mic.

Me too. What is the fix to this issue, return the computer to Dell for repair?

OK, my tech support was able to find and update the sound driver on the Dell site, and now the 3.5mm jack works.

I have precision 7550. I'm in contact with dell support after issues piled up. Seems to be tough nut to crack even for the dell support. Not sure this ever worked with this laptop. It just was not such a problem when I was anyways preferring bluetooth headset sitting at home due to covid-19. But what has been established so far is that this laptop is not supposed to use the Audio Maxx. It is supposed to have similar automatic detection as with androids.
I actually worked on this detection tech on various Nokia mobile phones and what we did have to sometimes do was to dig out an oscilloscope to see if the detection was run correctly. The oscilloscope was connected between GND and mic connectors of the headset. But you first need access to the pins with some special connector setup, so not easy to check this. And of course they do not have any kind of tracing/logging capabilities available to them at the support. Let's see if this will ever get solved.
