Precision 7550 CPU Throttle

Precision 7550; i7 10850H CPU @ 2.70GHz; Win 10 Pro

  1. Prior to plugging in a WD19TBS, task manager would show my CPU speed varying from 0.8 up to 4.3GHz (or so). Nice and fast.
    1. BIOS (1.7.0) shows turbo boost on
  2. Plugged in the WD19TBS dock, and the cpu seems stuck at 0.81GHz, no matter what we plug into/out-of the dock, what programs are running, etc.
    1. Unplug dock and restart--no change.
    2. Unplug dock and cycle power: CPU back to 4.3GHz.
    3. Plug dock back in--CPU steadily downgrades to 0.8GHz in about 5-10 seconds
  3. Dell support diddled with the system:
    1. Installed bios 1.8.0--no change
    2. Disabled some Windows services (non-MS)
    3. Went in to Dell Power Manager and chose "Ultra Performance"
    4. Set regedit key Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm from 3 to 4
      1. CPU now runs at 2.7GHz at all times
  4. I then made the following changes:
    1. reset the intelppm/start key back to 3
    2. Unplugged dock
    3. Changed Dell Power Management to "Balanced"
    4. Cycle power: CPU now stuck at 0.81GHz.
    5. Changed Dell Power Management back to "Ultra"
    6. Cycle power: CPU now "stuck" at 2.7GHz. It's a noticeable slowdown.

How do I get my system back to where it was before all this started? I don't even care to get the dock working with it right now...I need my speed back.

  1. I clicked on the link above; it took me to the Dell driver site, on the BIOS v1.8.1 page.
  2. I clicked on the second "Download" button. The first button is for the license txt; the second is the driver exe file.
  3. Below the Download button is a series of links; I clicked on "Installation instructions."
  4. I followed the steps in the "Updating the BIOS from Windows" section.

Hello.

What solution is available for the rest of us that can't install BIOS 1.81.1?

I have BIOS 1.39.1, the latest available for my model and I'm experiencing the same clock stuck at 0.8 GHz that completely ruins my work. The laptop is almost 4 year old but I kept it and refused to replace it due to the fact the new device would have been provided by a different manufacturer and I liked this one so much.

From what I red the problem may be owed to the battery, mine is completely dead and won't start the laptop even for a few seconds but changing it would make no sense considering how old the laptop is and the fact I never use the battery...

Let me know please if there is a solution to restore the normal behavior and get back the 3.x - 4.x GHz I used to work with , thank you.

Hello.

I had a fixed idea to test the laptop after I removed the battery and I can confirm it works like a charm.

To be clear I changed back the registry setup from 4 to 3 and now the laptop works as expected, processor clock fluctuates between 3.x - 4.x GHz depending on the workload, it is no longer the fixed 0.8 or 2.71GHz.

My laptop is not in warranty anymore and I don't use the battery at all and that's why I removed it completely and I'm perfectly happy without it as long as the clock works normally.
