TB18DC firmware update failed

Hello all,

I have a Precision 7530 and a TB18DC docking station.

I have tried to update the docking station to 1.07,but the MST1 and MST2 firmware update fails with:

Multi Stream Transport (MST) Hub #1 Firmware update failed

and

Multi Stream Transport (MST) Hub #2 Firmware update failed

 1.07_upgrade_fail.PNG

The following is the error log in the C:\Dell\UpdatePackage\Log\DellDockingStationFwUp_1.log:

I have also tried the 1.06 version. The update of the MST controller fails here as well:

1.06_upgrade_fail.PNG

It writes the following output in the _TMPD2LLU\SYNAPTICS\update.log:

Version: 3.12.002
Update result: 246
Error description: Initialize GPU library failed

The TB firmware and the TBC driver is updated to the latest version available on the Dell site.

Any help would be appericiated because I could not get my displayport output working!

December 15th, 2018 03:00

I have realized that I have not installed my NVIDIA Quadro's driver so I went to the Dell PRecision 7530 support site, downloaded the ISV certified drivers and updated it.

Now the firmware update utility did not even find my docking station:

Here is the log from it:

This is going to sound very silly. After updating drivers, and I presume having latest BIOS, did you cycle power on the dock as well as on the laptop?

I have the same problem but with Windows 10 and not Linux.
My update log is identical to your second one.

Dell exchanged my TB18DC this Monday but the result with the new one is the same.

I tried all possible solutions without success and all the drivers, Intel TBT firmware and Machine BIOS are up to date with the latest versions available.

Your post gave me the idea to try without the NVIDIA Drivers and the behavior is different. When I uninstall only the NVIDIA drivers I get this result :

All these informations are forwarded to the Dell assistant who is in charge of my problem and is waiting for the response from "Level 2 Support (Quality Service)".

The first answer from level 2 support was:

- Clean and complete re-installation of the operating system (which I refused to do because the 7730 is new and has been running for less than a week and after that I need 3 days to reinstall all my softwares, licenses and data).

- Re-installation of Intel TBT drivers (done several times).

- Replace the TB18DC if the previous solution did not work (Done this Monday and it does not solve the firmware update problem).

Excatly same problem here. I sent a detailed report to Dell team. I hope they'll find a solution and I'll share here.

Same for me

TB18DC replaced monday under warranty but same result ...

Sent all logs and informations to Dell support ...

Yes I do. I have tried all combinations, all variations, everything.

I have tried to disable the VGA switching (between the NVIDIA and Intel) in BIOS as well but it did not helped.

It is a shame that a ~4K USD notebook and a 400 USD docking station simply does not work together.

Hi @martonmiklos

I know that the log I posted is different, this one is what I get when I uninstall the NVIDIA drivers.

When I keep NVIDIA Drivers installed I get exactly the same Log as you : https://www.dell.com/community/Precision-Mobile-Workstations/TB18DC-firmware-update-failed/m-p/6235039/highlight/true#M1044

So I just don't post mine because it's exactly the same.

The TBT3 firmware that you link is installed on my system since the start, like all other last drivers, firmware and Bios available from Dell support. The only thing that I can't update is the TB18DC Firmware ... like you.

@martonmiklos

And cheats also dell's support level 1 and 2 ... because nobody over there thought that maybe the firmware was already the last one and that the upgrade tool can handle badly this case ... they replaced my Dock under warranty for that ...

So, I think you're right, my Dock probably already runs the latest firmware

Hi @sltechbe

The attached log is different than mine. In my case the the mst.exe returned 246 (unable to Initialize GPU library failed) and after installing the Dell's NVIDIA driver with 255 (General Failure).

In your case it returned 5 (Hard Qualification Error).

I used to have similar before I started to investigate the logs (before installing all drivers from Dell).

I suppose you will need to upgrade the Thunderbolt firmware in the notebook itself:

https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=NG0GY&osCode=WT64A&productCode=precision-15-7530-laptop

FYI:  after I gave up upgrading the MST firmware mentally I had a flash in my mind:

Primarily I use Linux on the machine, but I have not had any hope for upgrading the docking station firmware under Linux from the beginning. (Dell even states this explicitly). So after giving up I though I will look after if I could upgrade the MST firmware under Linux.

And yes it is possible with the help of fwupd !

After installing fwupd I ran fwupdmgr get-devices and voila:

It turned out that the MSTs in my dock has the very same firmware what the DELL distributes in the 1.0.7 upgrade package (3.12.002). According to the logs on Windows I doubt that I have ever managed to upgrade it with the Windows tools, I assume it was shipped with this version.

I am very angry because I have wasted significant amount of time to try to upgrade the Dock firmware which is the latest. Installing fwupd on Linux took ~30s running it also took similar. I have spent least 4 days with installing Windows 10 twice, installing the drivers, rebooting, retrying etc.

Anyway. It is easy (and safe) to get the fwupd running even on a live Linux running from an USB stick. Let me know if you want to verify the firmware versions. I can put together a short tutorial how to do that.

January 4th, 2019 06:00

@sltechbe

Ah okay I missed that part.

I would suggest to try out fwupd on a live Linux. It has a high chance that it already running the latest firware, just the poor quality fw upgrade software from Dell cheats you (and me).

Yeah it should have been suspicious not ridiculous from me when I saw this:

1.07_upgrade_fail.PNG

My first impression was: **bleep** they released this stuff to production with 0.0.0f6 version firmware...

Did you manage to update the firmware of your dock?

I followed the instructions in the user manual of the doc, and had no issues to update.

https://cdn.cnetcontent.com/syndication/mediaserverredirect/5d91c87eeb3bc05210d4266ffa4672cf/original.pdf

Otherwise, this dock is a pain to use. I have spent already three days updating the firmwares, drivers, setting BIOS, troubleshooting, and it still doesn't work as it should. When the laptop wakes up from standby, the USB connected mouse and keyboard doesn't work anymore. Either I unplug-replug the dock to the 7530, or I have to plug the USB hub directly to the laptop. But then all the advantages of the dock disappear.

I also don't like the fan. For office work, the 7530 now is silent, the fans are not moving. However, the dock's fan are almost constantly on. It is a silent humming, but annoying, when everything else is silent. The last thing I expected to be noise is the dock.

Yes and no. The 1.07 fw upgrade upgraded some internal parts, but failed to upgrade the Synaptic MST components. After a lot of struggling it turned out that they have the latest firmware (I was able to read the fw version with fwupd with Linux).

When the laptop wakes up from standby, the USB connected mouse and keyboard doesn't work anymore. Either I unplug-replug the dock to the 7530, or I have to plug the USB hub directly to the laptop.

I also facing with this issue (no USB mouse/kbd. after suspend) on Linux. The fun fact is that the USB devices are powered and they are visible to the host, just for some reason they does not working. I thought it is a Linux specific issue, but I guess you are running Windows.

I would be very happy if the dock noise would be my biggest problem. The fan noise of the notebook is far louder even when the machine is idle. My CPU core temps are OK (40-45°C) both the VGA, but I have a PCH temperature which idles around 75-80°C.

Do any info about the temperature of the PCH in your machine? Openhardwaremonitor or Coretemp could read it I think. I would appreciate if you could took some measurements, because I am unsure if my Linux has some throttling related problem or something similar. Thanks in advance!

Here are the temps when the Precision 7530 is idle, connected to the TB18DC dock, and a 4 year old Dell U2415 (24"m 1920x1200, HDMI on the dock).

I have downloaded the apps you suggested, these are the values.

It doesn't show the PCH temp I think.

At the beginning the fans were running more, but after a few days I think it became better. Now the fans are not running when I just do office work or browsing.
However, when I connect the TB18DC, the fans in the laptop come on more often.

Otherwise, I specifically bought the Precision 7530 because it has a bigger chassis, and the reviews said it has better cooling compared to the XPS15 chassis.

I had a Lenovo P72 (17") before, it was similar, but it had the fans running more often. I think it also depends on what software is controlling the fans in the OS?
