Yellow sticker on CPU die on precision 5520

Hi

I opened the laptop for a repaste for the first time because the system was running hot. After removing the heatsink and fans, I noticed a yellow sticker on the CPU die, but not the GPU die. The sticker has a QR code, a large "1" and text that reads "AMT/VPRO". The underside of the bottom panel has the same yellow sticker with a large "2" on it.

Is it normal for the CPU to have that yellow sticker where I found actual thermal paste installed?

As JOcean says, that should not be there. Remove the sticker. Do not scape with anything metal, as that will cause scratches that will interfere with heat transfer through thermal compound to the heat sink. Use a plastic tool or credit card.

Clean the area with ArctiClean 1, followed by ArctiClean 2.  ArctiClean 1 emulsifies old paste. ArctiClean 2 purifies the surface, removing any cleaner residue. For Canadian $10 I got a package containing a bottle of ArctiClean 1 and a bottle of ArctiClean 2, enough to do several computers.

To remove old thermal compound, you could instead use high-purity (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol. But, ArctiClean's kit works so well and is inexpensive, so go with that.

You are correct that the chip on the left is the GPU, probably NVidia, and the chip on the right is the CPU. To be honest I have never seen a sticker on the CPU and suspect it was inadvertently left there with a sticker denoting a stock number possibly. By comparison look at this page at eBay and notice that the CPU or GPU has no sticker on it. Follow @filbert directions and gently remove the sticker and clean the heat spreader. The picture below shows the CPU as it should be mounted with no sticker.

I suspect the temps will improve to much better levels after cleaning and repasting.

Any sticker on the heat spreader, I assume that is where the sticker is located, is a problem. That heat spreader has to have good direct contact with the heatsink in order to dissipate heat properly. You can call Dell tech support for more information but if the system were mine I would remove the sticker, clean any residue from the heat spreader, apply quality thermal paste, and reinstall the heatsink assembly.

Thank you for the replies guys, I have just realised I did not share a photo of the situation, find attached. I IMG_20221015_122659.jpgsuspected it should not have been there, please have a look and confirm it needs to be removed
