Thank you for sharing. I had the same problem before. I just turned off Windows firewall and the 1600 was recognized immeidately. Turned on the firewall again didn't interfer the scanner anymore.

I've tried turning off the Windows firewall, and it didn't change anything in my case.

Changing the order that the network adapters are referenced did the trick for me!

Good luck!

Thank you, thank you!! I have been beating myself bloody on this problem...network scan worked for some users and not others, with seemingly no common thread.

Turns out that some machines [even desktops] had our corporate firewall software installed, which inserted itself *above* the local area connection in the adapter priority. Move the LAC up to the top, and it worked beautifully.

You rock!

First, you rock! I, too, have been banging my head on this one...

I wanted to add a bit more information about this for others that may follow.

First, I had to reboot the machine to get the change to go into effect (it wasn't clear from the prior postings).

Second, on the laptop, with the Ethernet cable plugged in, I had to put the hard line ethernet interface above the wireless (which was also connected) to make it work completely. It would find it if the wireless was first, but I couldn't complete the install. Only when I put the ethernet first would it go all the way. Haven't tried it to see if the scanner will work without the ethernet port plugged in, but I don't really need it to in my application.

Finally, I am still unable to initiate a scan from the PC. Starting the scan on the printer works great, but when I want to scan directly into an application using the TWAIN interface, I get a port disabled error. There is another posting that details the lack of support for PC-initiated network scanning at this point in time.

Thanks again, OP!

I'm glad my findings have helped.  Hopefully it has helps lot of people fix this seemingly bizarre problem!

In any case, RedVizsla, I do not believe you can scan from the PC over the network.  I have (and am currently) using both a network and a USB connection to my 1600n.  I print to the 1600n using the network, but scan from the 1600n using USB.  Some say you can't have both connections, but I do, and it works.

BTW, it works with both XP and Vista.  I am happily using Vista now with the 1600n and network scan and local USB scanning works great.

Good luck!

Howdy guys, I've tried all the suggestions so far (moving local area connection to the top of the list), disabling firewalls, and I still haven't been able to connect to the scanner through the network. It works if I use the usb cable, but I need to use it through the network.. Can anyone lend a hand plz?

Grifiste,

I'm not sure if you're talking about scanning from the printer (using it's scan button) or trying to scan from a PC application using TWAIN/etc. You can only initiate a network scan from the printer itself, NOT from the PC. There is no support for PC-initiated scanning at this time (see the link in my posting above).

If you've having this problem from the PC, make sure you have the Dell Network Scan application loaded (it'll appear next to the clock in the taskbar), and that it can see your printer (it appears in the list when you open it, and the printer DOESN'T have a red X on it).

It seems network scan is 'disabled'. When I try to enable it, it says "scan feature not available" Why am I getting this error?

Can anyone else walk me through the setup for network scanning? Don't you all reply at once now.

For those of you having issues with Vista and the 1600n, Vista by default sets Windows file sharing to ask for a password to be able to access shared files etc. This messes up the 1600n from talking to a Vista machine over a network; go into the "Network & Sharing Center", select the network connection you use for the network the 1600n is on, and turn "Password protected sharing" OFF. See if that doesn't help.
