You can try using Lexmark drivers.
for MacOS X - http://www.lexmark-europe.com/domino/html/emea/drivem.nsf/(PrinterDetached)/A9637BF1A07824E8C1256EB60047A646?openDocument&CTR=EU&LNG=en_EU
and for Classic - http://www.lexmark-europe.com/domino/html/emea/drivem.nsf/(PrinterDetached)/4D1396DCE43F6D89C1256EB60047EAEF?openDocument&CTR=EU&LNG=en_EU
Thanks for the info, but I am concerned with the word TRY in your message. I'd hate to spend the money on the printer, have it shipped, get it setup, and then find out that the Lexmark drivers won't work. Have you tried it with the Lexmark drivers? Is the printer built for Dell by Lexmark?
Macs will print to a Dell 1700n! I just did it. I downloaded the Lexmark driver, installed it, added a new printer and it worked. Thanks to d3sp here is the Lexmark Driver web address:

Here is how I did it on 10.2.8:
Select Add
Select IP Printing from the drop down menu at the top
Put the printer's address in the box
Uncheck "Use default queue on server"
Enter the "Queue Name" (I entered the name as it appeared in the schools SBC home page, spaces and all.)
Select Lexmark from the "Printer Model:" drop down
Scroll down and to the Lexmark E322n and click on it to highlight it
Click "Add"
Your new printer will show up on the Printer List in alphabetical order and becomes the default printer.
A few notes:
The first couple of times I did this, nothing showed up on my print center print window - there was no indication it was working. This might be problem if you printer is in another room as is the case here. One time I saw the message "connecting to xxx.x.x.xx." another time it said "opening connection" and "Data file sent successfully" but most of the time nothing.
I also experience that when printing was stopped, the "Stop Jobs" was clicked, and the computer still sent the job to the printer.
If you do not uncheck the "Use default queue on server", your print center printer window will show "Connected from port 978..." and hand on that for a while, then tell you the xxx.xx.x.xx (the IP address you entered) address is busy.
Hope this answers your questions, if you have more questions reply to this and I will get the email notification
Don't mean to make this sound like the apple sight, but isn't it about time to upgrade to X? 10.2.8 is relatively stable and the bugs are mostly worked out. The price should be down since the current os is 10.3.5 and 10.4 will be out next spring. I do realize there are some programs or drivers that did not make the jump to OSX, so I will not push the point;-)
d3sp did also include the link above for the classic driver but since I gave up on os9 years ago, I cannot test it for you. He did say in his last point that he has used it with OS X. Maybe he has also used it with 9 and he answer that for you.
I didn't say that *I* don't use OSX. In fact, I am on Panther at home and on my TiBook. Most of the folks on my network at the office, however, aren't on OSX. Their choice, not mine.
