1710n laser printer W/ Windows 8.1

I just upgraded my computer from XP Pro to Win 8.1.  Everything went fine except for the drivers for my1710n laser printer. I downloaded the drivers, and ran the exe.  It extracted the drivers to a directory.  When I go into Advanced Printer setup, Windows correctly identifies the printer. I select the printer, click have disk,  browse to the directory win2KXP and it finds the file DKAAY740.inf, but when I click OK, I get the error message "Printer driver was not installed. The system cannot find the file specified". What should I do?

Thanks for your help.

Dear Rick,

Kindly follow the steps mentioned in the link below and let me know if it helped. Because the driver which you downloaded is for Windows 7 and I am not sure your Windows 8/8.1 PC has received all the updates as necessary in order for this printer to work on Windows 8. There is no Windows 8/8.1 driver package available for 1710n printer. Hence please check the steps in the link pasted below which is a work around & revert.

I really need to get this printer working again.  Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

Dear Rick,

May I know the link you downloaded the drivers for Windows 8.1?

Dell 1710n Printer  hardware does not work with Windows 8 or 8.1 as there are not compatible drivers available for this printer on Dell support site for Windows 8 and 8.1. Hence you are receiving the error while you are trying to setup or add the printer.

Please revert for any clarification.

I apparently had the wrong drivers initially.

Please look at this link: http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?docid=572562

It states that the windows 7 drivers for the 1710n will work in Windows 8. Unfortunately, when I open advanced printer setup and then click on Windows Update it never finishes downloading the list of printers.  Is there any other way I can get the driver referred to in the link above?

Dear Rick,

Thank you for your response. The driver which you have downloaded is a third party driver which may work or may not because as I said earlier the Dell 1710n printer was never designed for Windows 8/8.1 and hardware does not support this operating system.

However one thing I can recommend you is to update the latest version of firmware for the printer and check if that works fine as the latest firmware may communicate with the latest operating system. But this cannot be promised for sure.

You can download the latest firmware from support.dell.com

I just found the Windows 8.1 drivers for the 1710n on Microsoft's site: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/ScopedViewInline.aspx?updateid=364cbb5e-23cb-478d-8202-65ebed48271a

I downloaded the files, installed per the readme.txt file included with the drivers, but I am still getting the same error "The system cannot find the file specified"

I downloaded and installed the latest firmware and it's still not working. Your statement that the printer does not support the Windows 8.1 operating system contradicts the Dell article referred to in my post dated Dec. 20 above.  Please remember that I am getting an error message "The system cannot find the file specified" even when loading the dell drivers from here:  http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/dell-1710n?driverId=1V9CK&osCode=W764&fileId=2919429273&languageCode=EN&categoryId=DD

I would not be getting a  "cannot find the file specified" if it was a firmware issue.

Working fine now.  That did the trick.

Thanks for your help, and Merry Christmas!
