1710n Paper Jam

I have two Dell 1710n's both of which jam everytime.  I have used Dell's Online Troubleshooting Wizard, and was unable to resolve the problem.  The secondary paper jam error, determined by double pressing continue after the paper jam light comes on, reports either Paper Jam at the Input Sensor or Paper Jam under the toner cartridge.

The printer will print about 3/4 of a page then reports a jam.  There are no obstructions and the paper is not binding.  It just seems to stop under the toner cartridge with about an inch of the paper sticking out the back if you open the rear door.  I've cleaned all the rollers.  I have tried new toner and drums.  I have not been able to find anyone reporting this problem, yet I have two doing the the exact same thing.

Has anyone else seen this?  Thank you for your time.

One other symptom I forgot to add to the original post, since the paper is getting jammed under the toner cartridge only about the top 3 inches of print is getting heated by the fuser.  There is about a 3 inch section at the bottom that is not getting any toner.

Thanks to all who have posted a response so far.  The problem has still not been resolved though.

Also this problem occurs using the paper tray or using manual paper feed.

Have you flipped the pick up tires?

I've seen the input sensor error before, those pick rollers tend to wear out and cause problems like this.

its kind of a stretch but ive seen small bits of paper or other things land on sensors and cause it to report paperjams. it appears that nothing is jammed because something so small is obstructing the sensor.

I have also been having paper jam problems with my 1 year old 1710 for about the last 3 months.  Also with almost every printing job I get an extra sheet with a jumble of letters (looks like printing on top of printing) for one line ending in a happy face and the word ZeN.  Weird.  Any ideas.  I thought of maybe uninstalling and then reinstalling the printer.

Do you have dual trays? If so make sure you configure it on the web page

Hi Buskirk. Dont try flipping the tires. almost all dell printers are made by Lexmark and have a mixture of dell and lexmark parts. Alot of the rolls that pick the paper up out of the tray and these rolls are directional. All printers have allotted amount of time from start to finish. So when you send a print job and the printer starts the print job and if it takes to long from when it picks up the paper to when it is completely of the printer then the printer thinks there is a jam. Just replace the rolls in the paper tray that should fix the problem, but like i said the rolls are directional. just look at the plastic hub in the roll for the arrow. The arrow must face going out of the tray.

You replied to a pretty old thread.... probably should've started a new one.

Anyway, for it to crumple where you describe, it's got to be catching on something. Try printing with the back door open and watching the paper as it comes thru. You don't even need to hook the thing up to a PC to do this. Just reach around and press the continue button. When it flashes, it will start printing the printer setting report.

If it doesn't crumple, the problems being caused by the back gate. If it still crumples the fuser is the cause. Replace the fuser. Dell p/n RC442.

BTW.... not a good idea to use your email address as your "handle". This forum is web search-able and you just provided your email address to the world. Happy spam !!

Same problem here, the paper gets stuck under the toner cartridge, I can pull it out without tearing or crumbling, there is something in there that thinks there is a paper jam. Is there a sensor I can clean?

If you noticed, this thread was originally started back in 2007 and is probably not active any longer. You probably should start a new thread.

Those rubber wheels are not used in manual feed, where the problem occurs too...

I experienced the same message. The printer thought there was a jam when the paper in the stack was not picked up. The problem was the rubber wheels that pick up the paper from the stack. You can try flipping your tires over or for a few bucks buy a brand new set from Dell or Lexmark. I did , easy to install.

Vey late addition to this issue, but I have he exact same issue with mine.

It prints 3/4 of the page and then jams for no apparent issue every time (every single time)

Anyting new out there?

I have a 1700n that will not take the paper from the tray, It will act like it will and then not take the paper then go into error..Looks like the rubber wheels are not coming down to meet the paper..Maybe a bad sensor? second printer to do this
