1720dn printer won't work with XPS One
I try to be a positive person but I'm on the verge of tearing my hair out on this problem! I purchased an XPS One, which I love, and needed a USB-connected printer to replace my old parallel HP workhorse, so I bought the 1720dn laser printer, and it's not working well with my new One. When I first turn it on and send it a file to print, it does fine. But with any print jobs thereafter this is what happens: I get the new screen where it says the printer is "preparing," the printer powers on as if it's getting ready to print and then powers down (all this time my computer is frozen). Then there is a 15 second pause where nothing happens. Then the printer powers up again, a blank page prints with a dozen garbage characters in the upper left corner, and then -- finally -- my document prints! When it finally prints, the Printing Status window pops up saying that the printer is offline.
I don't believe this is a Vista issue because the printer works fine connected to my Dell laptop with Vista. The printer also works great connected to my old Dell desktop with Windows XP. This happens with the XPS One no matter what type of document I'm printing -- word processor, web page, etc. I've downloaded both the PCL and PS drivers and this problem happens with both of these drivers. I have all the settings set at factory default.
I shouldn't have to turn off my printer after each print job. Can somebody out there help? Thank you.

Hmmm..... bummer.
Interesting in that I've noted a few other threads where the printer has dropped "offline" in a Vista playground.
You indicate the Dell Laptop has Vista and you have no problem.
Is it the same flavor of Vista as the "One" (i.e., Vista Home, Basic, Ultimate, 32-bit, 64-bit, etc., etc.)
Did it ever work correctly?

Both the Dell laptop and the One have Vista Home Premium with SP1.
The printer worked fine on the One before the holidays. After the holidays I upgraded it to Vista Service Pack 1 and I thought that was when my problem started, so I uninstalled SP1 but the problem persisted. I now have reinstalled SP1 on the One since it didn't seem to be the cause of the problem.
The laptop with SP1 works fine with the printer.

Yes, I have a home network setup but did not add this printer to the network.
Thanks for your input regarding Vista SP1. Here's another thought why it works with the laptop:
When I bought the computer before the holidays I installed the driver on the XPS One (as it is a USB connection it automatically set up the driver). When I was troubleshooting earlier this week I tried connecting the laptop to the computer for the first time. The system searched and searched for a driver and came up with a different driver for the printer, something called "Dell 1720dn XL". I thought, hmm, maybe that driver will make it run on the One. I tried copying the driver via a flash drive onto the One but wasn't successful, and nowhere online could I find this "XL" driver.
Is it possible that this different driver works with Vista SP1? Or, is it possible that this printer works with the laptop because I loaded a printer driver after I installed SP1?
Thanks for your help.

One more question I wanted to ask.......
Do you have a home network setup and will the printer work using a network connection?

Good info..... I'm not aware of a "known solution" to this yet, but this is NOT the first time I've heard of SP1 "might be causing a print problem", and the problem remains even after SP1 is un-installed. And the next question you have is..... "Why doesn't my other system have this problem?" I have no clue.
If you want to be able to point the finger at SP1 or not, and you haven't loaded up your system with a lot of personal data yet, and have something to drive back down Microsoft's throat...... you can do a system restore using THIS PROCESS to restore it to the day you took it out of the box.
IMPORTANT..... this will WIPE OUT any personal data you have loaded on your system.
If you do decide to do this, leave it off the network (don't let it update) until after you install and test the printer. If it works..... be suspicious of SP1.
Let SP1 install..... see what happens.
Sorry if this seems like a convoluted way to do this, but I can't suggest any other way to prove or dis-prove whether SP1 is, or isn't causing this. Personally, I think it is.

Oops, I meant "when I bought the printer before the holidays...".

Sorry to hear that......
This is a network ready printer. You might want to try plugging it into your router and adding it to your network before throwing in the towel. This would not require any printer sharing, etc. and everyone on your network would have access.

Well, you know that it DID work once (it still does on the other system), something changed, and it doesn't work now.
Short of digging for an answer somewhere on the "net", or, placing the printer on your home network (no guarantee)...... you're running out of options. May want to try the reload.
Please share the results when you've taken one of these courses.....

I wonder if that's the Microsoft 1720dn driver? (XL)
Have you tried completely un-installing the print drivers, canceling any new hardware detect when you plug it back in, and using only the CD that came with the printer?

I just tried deleting both setups for that printer. I disconnected the printer, inserted the CD and loaded the drivers, rebooted the system and plugged in the printer. Still the same print problem. BTW, it loaded the PS3 driver.

I've searched the net and haven't come up with anyone else experiencing this problem, and I've spent more than ample time messing with it. Reloading isn't an option at this point. I think I'm going to sell it and buy an HP.
Thanks for your efforts. I really do appreciate it. These forums are wonderful.

How do I do that?
I did "uncheck" the print spooler option and tried sending directly to the printer but still had the same problem.

One more thing to check..... have you verified the print spooler service is running?

Rick (aka, Pudgyone),
Thanks for the input...... it's worth a shot, but not sure that fits here. She was able to print at one time, then SP1 got applied, now the printer doesn't work on the "One" system. I've seen a lot of anecdotal evidence on the web of SP1 doing this.
Diane,
Click Start, r-click My Computer, click Manage, click the "+" box next to "Services and Applications", click "Services".
Scroll down the list to find "Print Spooler", ensure status is Started and startup type is Automatic. While you're there, you may as well click on the service to select it, then click Stop, then click start..... and see what happens.
btw..... it's possible you might encounter the very same issue with any other printer.
