You had said earlier that you had reinstalled it on your portable and it worked. Now you tell us that you removed memory for it to work. Do you have this attached to different computers? Does it work on the portable with all the memory installed? If you, you should uninstall the printer from the other system and reinstall it again. What OS are you running on each system?

Ok here's how it is, after I received the printer back in Oct of 2006 I installed it on my main computer which runs win xp and it worked fine, then in Feb of 2007 I decided to install it on my dell laptop which runs win xp but never used it until this past month but only because I get this error message "error during scan please restart the program and/or switch the device off, then switch it on and wait while it warms up" after I hit ok I get this one "Scanner scan fail. Please restart your scanner". At which time I went through the process of uninstalling from my main computer and then reinstalling and hope that it would work but alas it did not, so just the other day I tried to scan without the ram in the printer and it worked, I put the ram back in and it didn't work. Today I uninstalled it from both my main computer and my dell laptop, then reinstalled it just on my main computer tried it with and without the ram it doesn't work. So then I reinstalled it on my laptop and it works with and without the ram. Please help Thanks

I suspect that this piece of RAM may be bad. Have you tried other RAM? Did you purchase the RAM from Dell? If so, then you can contact us through chat or any of these options.

Hello once again, this time I bring good news and hopefully it lasts. Well. I just uninstalled the printer again from my pc, took the ram out and uninstalled the usb root hub and left it unplugged for a few hours I just reinstalled it again and it didn't work, so just out of frustration I used the arrow on the 1815dn to just flip through the selections (ie. copy, scan, fax usb, and menu then I went into scan did the same thing and I tried it and it worked then I restarted my my just to see if I still works and it does. I have no clue what I did but if you do can you let me know. thanks.

Perhaps I may be able to shed some light.  I eperienced the same error conditions on my new Dell Inspiron 15 Windows 7 64-bit laptop.  When the person above noted that he removed his USB hub and it worked, it got me thinking.  This laptop has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports and I had the 1815 plugged into a 3.0 port.  As soon as I moved it to the 2.0 port, voila! the problem was resolved.
