1815dn printer cuts off last few lines

Hi guys: I have an 1815dn all-in-one printer that I really like but lately it has been cutting off (not printing) the last few lines of the page.  I have the latest driver, and I also checked all the page size settings: they are OK.  Also I checked Print Preview in the various programs where it does this and it looks fine, so I know that the correct info is being sent to the printer.  Any ideas?  I'm wondering if it's a mechanical problem.  Maybe something has slipped inside the printer?  Thanks for any help.  Fred

Hi Fred,

OK, just to clarify.... Does this happen only when printing from your PC, OR, does this happen when using the Copy function (ADF or Flatbed), OR, both?

What happens when you print the internally formatted "System Data" page?

Ilynster, great to hear from you.  Thank you so much for responding.  It also happens when I copy.  As for the System Data Page, it's hard to tell. What should I see as the last line?  The last line I see is "IP Address/Memory Size."  -- Fred

Hey Fred,

"IP Address/Memory Size." is the last printed line for this report. There should be approximately 3/4"(~19mm) of "white space" from the bottom of this line to the bottom edge of the paper.

Hey Ilynster:

I wonder why it doesn't cut off the last line of this report but cuts off the test page generated from Windows and all other Windows-generated docs.  Could this bt a clue to the underlying problem?

I take it by your reply that the contents of System Data List page were basically centered on the page, correct? If so, you probably need to look at the page settings in your driver.

Just to confirm one more way that the printer is not at fault, place the System Data List page onto the flatbed scan glass and make a copy of it. The original and the copy should be a duplicate, at least as far as positioning of the contents on the page.

Is your printer connected via USB or Network cable?

You're not going to believe this, and I think Dell will love it.

It suddenly dawned on me that the problem might be caused by the generic toner cartridge I was using. I didn't see how, but thought it might be worth checking out. I had an old Dell cartridge sitting around and popped it in. Lo and behold, the bottom lines were there! So I guess the mystery is solved. But could you please explain how a toner cartridge could cause such a distinct problem? Thanks for all your help.

Fred,

You never answered whether there was about 3/4" of white space between the last line on the system data list and the bottom edge of the paper.

As far as how a cart could do it? Yes.... if the circumference of the drum were different (I.e., not the identical size of the Dell drum), I can see this causing a problem with the placement of the image on the drum. Do the character seem just ever so slightly elongated?

Yes, that's a good fix. Usually one of the first questions I ask is "Are you using a genuine Dell cart?" At the time, this didn't seem like a cart related issue. Guess that'll teach me !!

Fred,

That's great, but I really wanted to know how much space there was at the bottom with the NON-Dell cart installed?

Yeah.... I learned something too...... never assume a genuine cart is being used. :emotion-3:

With the Dell cartridge, there is now 3/4" of white space at the bottom of the system data list. Thanks again for your help. I learned something new!

Ilynster:

There's also 3/4" white space at the bottom with the non-Dell cart installed.

Anyway it looks as if the problem is solved. But there's just one little wrinkle.  When I print a test page in Windows XP using the new Dell cart, the last line (at least I assume it's the last line) is partially cut off.  This line is much higher on the page than the footers that the new Dell cart is now printing fine, so I don'r really know what it means or if it matters.

Again, thanks for all your help.
