It sound like that you try to use an application software to initiate a scanning process to the 1815dn.
Direct connect will works but I am not sure this many PC to one 1815 network scanning will works!
Would someone futher clearify on this !!!

For sure the one 1815 to many PC scanning works very well on PDF/JPG scanning and it should give more or less the same result.  I believe the network scan work better this way; Push the scan button, select the user name, san the doc and it will open on the user's desktop with the right apps.

I tought initiating scan from PC application software would be a normal thing ,even for a scanner over the network.

It is possible to do it on 1600n ?

I set up my system last night, almost all night and still have the same problem. Win xp can find the 1815dn to configure it, and use as a printer, and set up as a scanner but then it says it is not there.

I have shut off the firewall, and the network scan program, can not find even the properties. The netwpork statis monitor show it as on line.

I can see it thru the router, but no scan from my pc. This is the only one I have set up so far. I have 3 more to add to use it.

My understanding is this 1600/1815 would do scanning from apps to a attached PC.  For networked scanning we have to use the networkscan software which will allow selection of user on the printer(scanner) and be able to save or open by selected apps on a netwroked computer.
Once it open by a apps on screen, it is up to you what to do...  Save it, email it ....
Acrobat PDF reader 5.1 and above would allow direct emailing from Acrobat.

If you read the 1815 manual, scanning to applications needs to select and press  Scan and PC.
For Networked Scan needs to select Scan and Network then PC (users)

May be we should have a Dell personnel to clearify on this...
