After lots of frustration, I was able to get one of our printers replaced by Dell. It's a refurbished 2330dn, so I'm slightly worried about the problem happening again, but it was getting to the point where the printer was unusable. Just an FYI. We still have several others that do it off and on, but they're not as heavily used as the one which was replaced.

After doing some research it appears Dell will not let anyone make reman cartridges for their printers, anyone that does try to make them get's sued. So your idea to use a Lexmark cartridge is not going to work.

From what I understand the replacements do it too.

I have a couple of 2330DN's.. both are using Dell brand HC cartridges..  I've had the new firmware ever since they were delivered, and have had the problem.

It has been increasing over the past few months - and now it happens every time on one printer..  I'm about ready to throw these out the door.  Completely frustrating, and support for the printers is awful - the downloads and firmware update webpages are quite difficult to navigate... took about 20-30 minutes to figure it out and download the right things....  can't seem to find any information, other than this forum filled with complaints about the problem, on any support that's available.

I'm quite upset about this.

On our next cyclical replacement, I am going back to Acer monitors and HP printers. Dell monitors and printers are not exactly reliable, the desktops are fine.

FYI - Just talked to a phone rep ... he said the reason that it's giving an error is because we're using the "Use and return" cartridges.. the problem I have with that, though, though, is that it started happening with the original cartridge (which I'm assuming was a new cartridge, instead of use and replace).  He also said that Dell only puts a 90 day warranty on new cartridges, and a 21 day on use and return.

I tend to think that things should work for the purpose you buy them for - if they plan on you getting that error, then put it in writing.  Perhaps I expect too much.

Actually, I believe the firmware dated 08/2011 fixed it. We haven't received an error since.

This answer might be a little late, but we've been having the same troubles as everyone else with our 2330DN printer.  Found a YouTube video that demonstrated what contacts to clean inside the printer  I did what was shown using a q-tip and alcohol and so far have had no troubles with the reoccuring error.  If it comes back I'll let you know.  So far so good.  You might give it a try and see if it works for you.
