Do you have an update on this? Were you able to send PS fonts to the printer? Are you saying that if you are printing a PDF doc containing a different soft font than those stored in the printer, the document which is output will not have the proper fonts?

No. I'll give you an example: Let's say, your document uses the postscript font "Univers 45 Light". When you print this document with the 3100cn via postscript, the driver knows that your printer has this font installed. Therefore, it doesn't download the font as "softfont" to the printer, but gives a postscript command instead: "...use your integrated font 'Univers 45 Light'". Since this integrated font is not internationalized, international characters (like ä ) in your document will not be printed.

All fonts that are not integrated in the printer, are downloaded automatically as softfont (if they are availably on your pc!). If the font installed on your pc has the full international character set, it should print international characters correctly.

I did some reading in the Adobe specification and found out that the trick is to edit the "Font Information" section within the .ppd file (it's a text file, you can use any text editor). You have to delete the respective "*Font..." lines in the .ppd. Then the postscript driver has no more knowledge about integrated fonts and uses softfonts instead. Problem solved... (see above).

Hope that helps.

It's a good idea to keep your original .ppd file ;)

Thanks so much for the detailed response. That's very helpful. I ordered the printer a couple days ago...
