3100cn Problems printing photos (RAM Upgrade?)

I have a 3100cn that has problems printing multiple photos or other large file-size jobs. For instance, when you print 9 421KB JPG files (which decompress to 7+ Megs when sent to printer - as listed in the Microsoft Printer Manager), the printer will hang and burp out an IOERROR with "offending command: image". Does anyone else have this problem? I am considering a RAM upgrade (I currently have the default 64MB installed), but would like others thoughts.

If I wait until each photo prints before sending the next, the photos print fine.

Update: I found a 128MB stick of SODIMM SDRAM which I installed for a total of 192MB now.

I have not had this error with much larger images or powerpoint presentations. Try reinstalling the postscript drivers, perhaps it's not sending the image termination code properly? Also, it helps to post the type of computer you have, OS, Ram, etc...

onCall,

We run a mix of systems: Jag 10.2.8, XP Pro w/ SP2, and Win2K. We have ran into problems (inconsistently) with all of them, all on different print jobs. On Jag 10.2.8, I have problems printing multiple web pages from the Oreilly Safari website. On the XP Pro I have had problems printing a 100 pg mailing label job.

The specific image printing problem mentioned above (9 jpgs) was sent from a Dell Optiplex GX240 1.7 Ghz P4 w/ 512MB RAM. The images were printed from Microsoft Image Editor.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the printer driver as suggested (both PostScript and PCL). I have also checked Dell's website, and the driver listed has the same revision number as the one originally installed from CD.

Thanks for your help,
-John

hmm. Does the label set have color? If not, you can install a new PS driver to the same port and disable the color engine, which should change the print language set. I use this method to quickly select black-only (i.e. one driver for color proofs, one for bw proofs).

Good luck!

Yes, the labels did have color - a color logo. It was one of the reasons we went with a color laser instead of a B&W.

Good suggestion about disabling the color engine for B&W prints, though. I had planned on doing that and setting it do default on all our workstations so save on color ink.

Do you have any other suggestions? I've been on the phone with tech support, but it wasn't much help.

The error code that came out during the label print job was

ERROR: syntaxerror
OFFENDING COMMAND:

STACK:

How's your Mac knowledge? Can you think of a reason why a 3 page webpage printed over lpd using both the supplied Dell driver or the generic PS driver would spit out the same error?

The error I got from that one was

ERROR: ioerror
OFFENDING COMMAND: image

STACK:

-dictionary-

Since this printer is OEM'd by XEROX?? Lexmark?? Maybe I could try out one of their drivers.

Oncall, do you manage your print jobs over a domain controller? We are not on a domain because we're at a University and are discouraged from doing so for security reasons.

I have seen the first error message on an HP 4100n (black/white) office printer using the PS driver. In the most basic terms, it is saying that the application is not generating proper postscript code, like an unrecognized font or corrupted image. You can try a couple of things with the driver, like changing flatness or altering the resolution, which would alter the sent ps code. Likewise, you could try to change the resolution of the image or the fonts used and see if it helps.
It is very likely that your PCL6 driver will work perfectly in this instance. Can you try to export the file to your PC and print with the PCL driver?

The second error message I have not encountered, but it is clearly suggesting that Safari is sending a color postscript command not in the reference database (called the dictionary). Does IE for osx print it properly?

The OEM is fuji/xerox, not lexmark (Lexmark does the Dell bw laser and inkjet printers only), so perhaps you can try a ps driver from them.

My printer is attached to a local router (to separate our group from the larger superdomain) It is accessed over TCP/IP, but actually filters/manages the throughput. It's essentially acting the part of a small/home office printer.

let me know what happens, and good luck to you
