Try upgrading the firmware using a usb cable and the network cable disconnected. If there is any data loss when upgrading through the network (collision, etc), the update will fail.

As to your first problem, if smaller documents print fine, you may be getting memory issues (document too large to fit in memory). Try using the Postscipt Driver and see if the issue persists or not.
