I am brand new here and wonder if there is later info on this topic?  I have a friend with a Dell laptop and 725 printer and she gets the same message on bootup.

I tried all the usual things and then noticed that the printer driver is very old (2001) SO I FOUND A 2006 DRIVER ON THE Dell download site.  I ran the exe file and it unzipped and went all the way to 2 menu options to install on a personal computer or on a network (I forget the exact wording) so I selected option #1 for personal use on a single computer  And nothing happened. I figured it was a bad d/l so I d/l the driver 2 more times and got the same result.  (I checked and the driver date is still 2001)

The driver file is 115590.exe.  I tried to install it several different ways and still can't get it to install.

The printer works fine with the old driver but that error message is a royal pain.

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Try re-installing the printer this way.

How are you connected to the printer? wired of wireless?

If wired, disconnect your printer. Go to start/programs/Dell printers and un-install your printer.

Restart your computer.

Now go to drivers and downloads/select product/printers/select your printer. Download drivers, Utilities, firmware and Patches. From what I see, the patch is to remove the printer.

Install your printer drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect it.

Then the Utilities and firmware.

If wireless, fix your network first.

Update the firmware in your wireless router. Manufacturer's website, make & Model needed.

Broadcast SSID(You may want to change this to make it easier to connect)

Use WPA security

Mixed b and g mode(n if available)

Use channels 1, 6 or 11. Most devices work better on these channels.

After router is done, now setup your wireless print server/printer.

If wireless printer server is used, Plug USB cable into computer and print server. Insert the print server disk. Choose Network, then choose print server and follow the instructions. If the disk does not work for Vista, you may have to go to drivers and downloads and download the 3300 drivers and install from that program.

Now setup the printer.

Now go to drivers and downloads/select product/printers/select your printer. Download drivers, Utilities, firmware and Patches. From what I see, the patch is to remove the printer.

Install your printer drivers. Choose Network. Install the drivers.

Everything should now work.

Thanks for all the tips but since this is wired much does not apply.  When I try to install the updated driver with the printer already disconnected, the driver will NOT install.

Also, I am trying to get rid of the error message.  ( Iam hoping that the updated driver will resolve this but I can't verify since the driver will not install--even with the printer disconnected.

Even tho I am not using the computer or printer on a network, maybe I should try the network option?

Thanks,

Jerry

When you were installing the driver, that's when you connect the printer.

That's part of my problem:  the driver install file does not prompt to install the printer and does not complete the installation.

Sounds like you have a USB Problem.

Unplug the printer.

Make sure everything is un-installed.

Go to device manager

Go to USB controllers

Starting at the bottom, un-install everything in that section and restart your computer, Windows will find everything again and correct the problem.

Please be patient, it may take a few minutes for everything to install.

Now try to install the drivers, it should prompt you to connect it.

It may or may not. I can't really tell you. I've seen people saying that their USB ports work for some things and not for other things. If you go to the new hardware wizard, it will tell you everything is working correctly. Go to device manager and no yellow exclaimination marks. Yet if you un-install them and restart your computer, everything seems to work again. Seen this too many times. A Windows problem? Sounds like one to me.

If it isn't that, then you can wait for a suggestion from someone else.

Sorry I couldn't help you.

Also, you noted an error at boot up.

Check your Bios and make sure you have it in the proper boot sequence. Sounds like the computer is trying to boot from the USB port.

Do you really think I have a USB problem considering the fact that the printer works just fine using the old driver?  My only reason for going to the newer driver is because of that annoying message that keeps popping after each reboot.

I'll try 'em all.  Thanks again for all your suggestions.
