926 Won't Scan to .pdf

First, let me thank you for your advice on getting the Dell 926 to work with W7.  I just got a new Dell Inspiron Desktop with W7.  I followed your instructions and was able to get it up and going.  But, I'm having a problem that may or may not be related to the switchover to W7.  The printer seems to work fine but when I scan anything, I get the "job status window interface has stopped working" error message after the scan is complete.  If I scan to a .jpg, the file appears fine despite the error message.  But, if I scan to a ,pdf, it produces no output file - just the error message.  Another point - although I've had the 926 for several years, I've never tried to scan with it before, so this problem may always have existed - I just didn't know it.  I'm trying to use it now because my other scanner (a Canon) doesn't seem to work at all with w7.  Any ideas?

 BethesdaDavid,

Try reading...

Update list of applications to send scans to

Make sure you have an OCR Program installed.

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Or

Try Simple OCR

If using the Sprint FineReader, open it and activate it. Register and say it was purchased with the printer. It may update for you., also. Need an OCR Program to scan to Word and maybe adobe. Programs should be in the list of applications to send scans to.

Thank you for the suggestions.  I had already tried adding a new application to scan to, and had done so before I wrote to you.  I added Foxit Reader (my .pdf application) and it didn't work.  After receiving your suggestion, I retraced the steps, did it over again, and this time it worked.  I also added the OCR software, my image editing software to the list.  They all seem to work OK.  But, no matter what option I pick or what software the output goes to (even to file), I still get the same error message, even though the scan produces the correct output.  I can live with the apparently senseless and harmless error messages, but it's kind of annoying. The error message also gives "problem details" as follows:

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:    APPCRASH
  Application Name:    dlcxjswx.exe
  Application Version:    4.48.0.0
  Application Timestamp:    4538661d

If you have any suggestion as to how I can fix this, I'd be grateful.  But, I'm still happy that it's at least working now.  Thanks.

 BethesdaDavid,

My question(s)...

Did you install the Vista drivers in the compatibility mode?

If you're willing to try this...

Make a system restore point. Windows 7 is supposed to make one every time you restart your computer. How to Create a System Restore Point in Windows 7

Now disconnect the printer. Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the Vista drivers that match your operating system. Vista 32-bit for Windows 7 32-bit and Vista 64-bit for Windows 7 64-bit. Install the drivers in the compatibility mode. You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on)

Instructions to install in the compatibility mode and the download for the patch/drivers can be found at...

926 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

I think you application error crash is from the drivers not being installed correctly. If this doesn't work, then you can use the system restore point to restore the computer to what you have now.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think I'm going to call it a success and leave things alone.  I followed all those steps (including carefully removing the printer driver with the utility and installing the Vista driver (64 bit, like my W7) in compatibility mode) in order to get this far.  Since then, I've done a lot of work to get the Dell All-In-One Center software to work with my various other applications, and I don't want to start over.  This is good enough.  At least until I've solved all the rest of the annoying problems that the changeover to w7 has caused.  (The next person who tells me how much better W7 is at home networking and sharing is going pay dearly.)  Thanks again for the help.
