942 won't scan -- seeking OCR app from CD

Hello, I've seen this issue posted a number of times in these forums, and now I'm caught up in the same challenge. For some reason, when I try to scan to Word 2007 using my 942 AIO, I get a message to install the OCR software from the CD. Well, I'm not sure where that CD might be hiding since I moved, and I'd rather not resort to any chintzy 3rd-party OCR app. Isn't there any way to download Dell's official OCR app, since it's obviously not included with the latest drivers?

Thanks in advance,

~~Cheryl in Tacoma

Cheryl,

I haven't had any problems with installing many printers using XP. My guess is that something might have affected your computer. If you have the disks, then I'd try a repair of XP following the instructions below. Make sure to disconnect anything using the USB Ports and also un-install the printer, if it's still installed.

Insert the operating system disk and restart your computer.

Press any key to boot from cd.

Choose install.

Do the agreement.

Now choose repair. let it do it's own thing. Takes about 40 minutes.

Remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card

Remember to get all the Windoiws updates, I have the custom ones, also, especially the net framework and get the latest Java.

After you restart your computer, then run the patch, restart one more time then try installing the proper drivers for the printer, you'll be prompted when to connect the printer.

I forgot to mention, you then need to read this article to setup the Dell All-In-One Center to scan to Word.

LuckyCharmWA,

Try re-installing the printer drivers this way. The Dell All-In-One Center is in the drivers package and if I'm correct, so is the OCR program.

Disconnect your printer. Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit drivers

All other drivers

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

If you have the printer disk, double click my computer. Go to the drive with the Dellxxx disk and right click on it, left click explore. Go to the OCR folder and double click on it. Go to setup.exe and double click on it. This will install the OCR Program.

Or

Try this FREE OCR Program.

Thanks for trying to help. I ran the patch you recommended (I had actually downloaded it before, but forgot all about it) and reinstalled the printer. No luck. I cannot scan to either Preview or Word. The All In One Center seems not to be installed. When I do try to scan, I get a scrolling error message on the printer's display reading: "The All In One driver did not respond."

I never had any of this kind of problem until I installed Office 2007 Home & Student. Since I've paid for it, I'd really like to not have to abandon it. I'd also really like to keep the 942 (fondly remembering the good old days -- as in weeks ago -- when this was a very slick and reliable machine).

Any suggestions? This is starting to turn from a minor annoyance to a major headache.

Update: I finally located the original installation CD and installed the OCR software (along with the original drivers) from it. No luck. I then retried, choosing a "Typical" installation, which also installs photo-editing software I didn't want, but still can't scan from the printer. I then installed the updated driver I downloaded from the Dell website. No change.

FWIW, I can scan if I go to Start, Accessories, Scanner and Camera Wizard. The problem seems to be that the AIO Center does not install -- therefore there is nowhere to open up a preview, select programs, etc. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

~~Cheryl

Cheryl,

Did you disconnect the printer, run the patch, restart your computer, install the proper drivers(from Dell's website) then connect the printer when prompted?

It need to be done in this order in order for everything to install.

Yes, I did all that. I even scrubbed the registry and tried installing under a brand-new user account. I am at the point of installing Windows XP to a new directory. From what I can tell, this is a rather common issue with Dell AIO's, and so far I haven't seen a reliable fix yet.

Well, guess what? It worked!! :emotion-11: :emotion-21: :emotion-46:

And now my Windows Search, which has never worked properly, also works! Of course I now have to go to Windows Update and install SP2 (or 3?) but at least my printer's behaving. Merry Christmas!

Cheryl,

I have been using SP3 on my Dell Inspiron B130 since is came out. I had all the version on this computer and IMHO, it runs fatser than SP2 did. Some people have issues and some people don't. Here's the story. I un-installed Internet Explorer 7, which was giving me all sorts of problems. It disabled my camera software, my phone software and a spyware removal tool. I went to control panel, add/remove programs, show updates and removed Internet Explorer. Got message that these programs were installed and may not work properly. I clicked ok, then followed the instructions. Upon restart, I have IE6 back and everything worked again. I use Mozilla Firefox for most of my web searchiing.

Thanks for posting back. Could you mark the soultion so is someone else searches the forums, they can see what you did to fix your problem.

Thanks and have a great Holiday,

Rick

Hi Rick,

I marked the solution as a "Favorite" -- is that what you meant by marking the solution?

I should also mention that during the reinstall of my Dell printer software, setup couldn't find dlbucub.dl_ -- fortunately I had downloaded and extracted the latest update, so was able to browse to that folder to locate it. Maybe this is part of an updated driver?

Repairing Windows XP also disabled UPnP as a security measure, but my surveillance camera uses this functionality for remote viewing, so I'll have to re-enable that manually in my firewall if I want to view live video over the Internet.

Yes, the later versions of IE have been known to cause conflicts.  I currently use QuickVerse 2006, and after calling tech support to find out why some minor feature wasn't working (I can't even remember exactly what it was at the moment), they told me that IE8 can cause the problem. I'll probably end up upgrading QuickVerse anyway, so it's not a big deal.

Oh, and another side bonus of repairing WinXP -- I can now do a print preview in Microsoft OneNote 2007 without having it set as the default printer, which was a royal pain. Took their tech support days to arrive at that solution -- wish they had just recommended a repair install of Windows instead!

I know this AIO center problem has been documented on CNET and elsewhere. When I get the chance, I'll go ahead and post the solution in those forums as well.

Cheers,

~~Cheryl

Cheryl,

I have a few posts there, too. I check there from time to time, helping some people. Have a few printer posts there with different printers and installing drivers. Harder to make links there, much easier here but I was surprised that some of the moderators didn't delete the one post I made around Thanksgiving linking back to here. I have many printer posts here and have helped many with printers and I have helped many install Windows Updates at CNET. The thank yous keep pouring in and I reallly don't reply to all of them but it's the thought that I helped many people and they're happy is really all that matters.

Here is also something that may help you.

Hi Rick,

I think I've isolated it to IE8 -- everything worked swell until I installed that. As soon as I uninstalled it, using Control Panel, Add & Remove Programs, my AIO worked just fine again.

IE8 evidently messes a LOT of things up.

Cheryl,

I had the same problem with IE7, still have IE6 on this computer. I will deal with IE7 and others when I get another computer. Glad you isolated this as well.

The thing you needed to click as the solution was verify answer in the post(s) that helped you get your problem straightened out.

Have a nice holiday,

Rick
