A920 problems

I have a new a920 and have installed it and it scans but won't print.  I have tried the cord on another pc and it works ok.  When I go to print it won't print and when I try to delete the print job it freezes and won't delete.  I have done all the things suggested: reboot uninstall reinstall etc.  I even down loaded R60655.exe and that didn't help either.

Make sure the USB port is working properly. Plug a different USB device (one you've confirmed works on another computer). If XP was installed as an update (either from Home edition to Pro or from an earlier version of Windows), many times XP doesn't install the USB drivers properly. However, if other USB devices work on the port, there is most likely another problem.

If the USB port doesn't work, first un-install and re-install it's driver from Device Manager. Just right-click on the USB driver and from the drop-down list select uninstall. Then right-click on the top most icon and select scan for hardware changes. This should re-install the USB drivers. Again, this is only if your other USB device did not work on the USB port.

I did this and still no go.  I sent the #$@%  back to Dell.  As it was a free printer upgraded to an all in one I hope I get a credit---not sure I want a FREE printer as the ink is very expensive and they can't be refilled or bought anywhere but Dell,Thanks for the help.  Dakota Donna

Hello,

Dakota Donna, it looks like you are having the EXACT same problems that I've been having.  I just bought a brand new 8400 Dell system with the A920 All-in-one printer and it did not want to print at all.  So, it looks like Dell will be getting another A920 sent back to them.  I'm curious to see the number of RMA's that they have on this junk printer.  I think it's cheaper for them to pawn it off as a free printer to their customers, rather than sending it to the garbage dump...

I think you are right.  I did get a credit to my credit card though but no offer to send the"free"  printer they advertised. I had paid $25 for the upgrade to the all in one.  What a piece of junk! Good luck sending yours back.  Dakota Donna

Sorry your A920 didn't work. I received two as 'gimmies' a while back. Gave one to a friend and kept the other. Both of ours are still truckin' along. The Lexmark 1185 seems to be the same printer (with the ink cartridge differences, of course). We just bought one for the high school and its scanner head was jammed. Took it back to Wal-Mart for an exchange and the second one worked fine. I'm given to believe it just a low-end machine. If it gets bumped around during shipping, it doesn't work. But the price was right and it does print some rather nice photos. That and it doesn't seem to drink up ink as bad as the earlier model Lexmarks or a lot of the HP DeskJets. I think I can live with the relatively high ink replacement cost. That's pretty much the norm for inkjets. I do most of my heavy-duty printing on a laser -- the consumables are just cheaper. Actually, if it hadn't been free, I'd not have bought one. I swore off inkjets about two years ago. The next color printer I actually buy will have to be a laser. Fortunately the prices are coming down enough I can justify the expense to my wife.

I am having the same problems.  I have a new computer and the new printer (which was a freebie).  I cannot get the document queue to clear and therefore you cannot print any other documents until that is cleared out.  I worked with Dell Support over e-mail and did everything I was told to do...no good.  Their solution is to send me another one (although I really felt like that is a waste when they could have worked with me enough to find out what the problem is with this one).

It also pulls the paper in sideways, which is annoying.  I may just return it and ask for a refund.  I have a HP Deskjet 612C that is a pretty good printer and has lasted over five years so far.  I really would like to go to a laser printer anyway.
