A940 ink refill didn't work - leaking like crazy

So I refilled my black ink cartridge according to the kit instructions (drill out air hole and fill).  It looked ok but when I put the cartridge back in, it starts leaking.  Where did I fail in the process?

Maybe sealing the drilled holes? I find that using refill kits, or generic one that were refilled and sold, often mess up the print head. So even though it may be more costly to buy the OEM, in the long run it could save time and trouble. (Not to mention voiding you warrenty?)

Over filling cartridge has caused excess ink flow for the first several copies in my experience; haven't figured out how to avoid overfilling yet.  After reinstalling a refilled cartridge I run several used sheets (back side) of paper thru to test and avoid messing up my documents.

I refilled both black and color, using a kit.  Seemed to work at first.  Then, some leaking.  But mainly the black stopped printing altogether.  And then the color started to go.   Was very careful in filling them, I thought.  Cost several hours and using many, many test sheets.

Ordered new cartridges.

My COSTCO ims refill kit came w/ a phone number for problem solving.  I was instructed to soak the non printing black cartridge in hot tap water for 20 - 25 minutes to clean out a Dell chemical meant to screw us up.   Use about 1/4" - just enough to cover the printing / metal tips.   Had to do this several times over a week or so and have had no similar problems on subsequent refills.  Typically I have had two pages of excess ink flow after refilling.  If problem is greater than this, you might want to inject less ink more often.   Also, blot printing tip gently w/ paper towel, etc. to soak up excess ink.   My kit definately said to seal drilled hole - using scotch tape.

thank you lilsheepck.  that's helpful.

Yes, my kit came with CD with instructions, plus phone no. for problems, plus online resource too.

I was wondering about the sabotage chemical.  It's like the cartridge would start to hemorrage, unprovoked.  Too bad I've already thrown away the black cartridge.  I got tired of running test copies.

Did you first run a cleaner fluid, through the black cartridge?  My kit had that; they said to keep running test copies, 'til it was gone, then fill with the black ink.

So when you soak the cartridge that means any existing ink will leach out?

Less ink more often?  Okay, I'll try that too.

Yes, I blotted the printing electrodes, or tip, gentle, with paper towel.  Then I did start wiping it with the soft paper napkin.  Maybe that's what did it too.

And no, I didn't seal the fill hole with tape.  Maybe that was the problem, too.
