Having the same problem. Changed black and color print cartridges. Printed alignment page. Now receiving Cartridge stalled error and Hardware error 0502.
I spoke with tech support online, and they gave me the solution. There is a ribbon that runs in back of the cartridge carrier. If it comes off, the "cartridge stall" and error message will appear and the printer will stop working until turned off and on, only to stall again.
There is a slot in the back of the cartridge carrier and the ribbon like structure has to be carefully reseated into it, the carriage itself then moved carefully back and forth by hand. The power must be off, and the printer power cord disconnected when doing this, of course!
Anyway, I tried the fix and printed a test page and all seems to be working normally.
If anyone doesn't quite see what the problems are, ask tech support "Chat", and they will send you a link that has pictures of the repair procedure.
I have the same problem. I tried to contact Dell chat for the link to the web site to fix it, But because i did not buy directly from Dell, They would not talk to me. Would someone please have mercy on me and tell me exactly how to fix this problem??? The ribbon seems to be where it is supposed to be. I would appreciate any help. Contact me at covguy58@ntelos.net.
I followed the instructions from an earlier message to this board (searched the board for "hardware error 0502") and the problem is solved. I couldn't really figure out how to move the cartridge with the belt as directed in step 12 but I was somehow able to slide the cartridges to the center while the power brick was removed from the printer and when I repowered it, the problem was gone.
Please do the following steps to get rid of the error.
Open the print cover.
Locate and remove any obstructions in the rear of the printer that could block the printer carrier path.
Close the printer cover.
If Nogo, Try this:
Remove the power brick from the back of the printer.
Wait five seconds.
Firmly reseat the power brick.
Make sure the printer is turned on.
Lift the printer's front cover.
The ink cartridge should be in the up/loading position unless the printer is busy.
Squeeze the tabs on the cartridge lids and lift the cartridge lids up. The cartridges will pop up when the lids are fully lifted.
Remove the cartridges.
Replace the cartridges.
Snap the lids closed.
Close the printer's front cover.
Remove the power from the printer and slide the cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer. (Take the top part of the belt and move it gently to the right.).
You are the only one on here that seems to have figured this out, I would be willing to pay you if you would call me and walk me thru this although I wont be back to my office until next week, If you are interested email me at

I'm having the same problem. Tried chat with a technician. The suggestions were fiddling with the encoder strip, and turning the printer upside down and shaking it. I thought it was fixed, as I've printed quite a few things with no problem, but still can't print photos. I'm wondering if it's because I'm using best quality, and it moves much more slowly, perhaps allowing it to get stuck more easily. I notice that there is a bit of ink at one end of the rod that the carrier slides on. Could this be what it's sticking to?
It looks like my theory was correct. I've successfully printed a photo. Here's what I did. I used a damp cloth to wipe off the visible ink at the end of the metal rod. Then I realized I could not see if anything was on the back of the rod. So I cut a small strip of cloth and slid it behind the rod. It was not easy to slide it behind, but I succeeded by cutting the strip to a point. Then I managed to slide it behind in a spot where I could see the end, and used tweezers to grab the end and pull it through. Then, holding both ends of the cloth, I moved it back and forth along the rod. After doing this I was able to print a photo, so I hope it's fixed.
Thank you so much for your step-by-step process on that hardware error 0502!! I followed your steps and I think it's fixed!! (I hestitate to say that - I've been fooled so many times when I thought it was fixed, ya know? Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!
