AIO 926 - Installation won't continue

I bought a new computer, and am trying to set up my AIO 926 printer on it.  But for some reason I cannot get past the "connect the printer" screen.  I connect the printer to my computer, and windows will try to install it (and fail), but the installer software absolutely refuses to allow me to hit 'next'. This will be the third computer I've set it up with and the first time I've seen this problem - what's going on, and why can't the bleeping installer notice the printer?

I'm using W7 HP 64-bit, which was installed onto a brand new SSD about two hours ago.  There's no antivirus or firewall loaded on it yet.

eflan,

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs from ther queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer was removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the Vista 64-bit drivers. Install the Vista 64-bit drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on)

Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...

Dell 926 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

Remember virus programs and firewalls will block communications.

Why would I need to run that tool to remove stuck print jobs when this was the FIRST TIME being attached to this computer?  Previously, I did all my printing off a machine running XP and had zero issues with it.  Unfortunately, it's been replaced.

Anyway, I ran that tool and tried again.  I re-downloaded the drivers that you linked - which are the exact same drivers I used before - ran the installer in compatibility mode (like I did before) and got to the part where it tells me to attach the printer. I attached the printer and nothing happens - the installer DOES NOT recognize that the printer has been attached and I can't click next.

I've tried every single USB port on my computer (and there's fourteen of them).  They work.  If they didn't, I wouldn't be typing this right now.  I tried powering up the printer both before and after connecting it via USB - nada.

All drivers for this PC have been downloaded from the appropriate manufacturer and installed except for this bloody printer.  Windows is completely up to date.

Why isn't it letting me hit next?

eflan,

Delete print jobs is not needed if the printer was never attache to the computer. I have seen a stuck print job prevent the printer from being removed.

Your HP Windows 7 64-bit system. Did the computer come with Windows 7 64-bit or was it upgraded?

Is this a laptop or desktop computer?

What virus program and firewall are you using?

HP = Home Premium, not Hewlett Packard btw.

It's a desktop.

The computer came in pieces - it's custom built. I installed the OS myself from an OEM disk.

When I was trying to install the printer only Windows Firewall was active.  I installed COMODO's firewall and antivirus last night, but it wasn't on the computer when I was trying to install the printer.  Like I said in the first post, the computer was just set up with a clean install of W7.

eflan,

On many computer systems, when there is a clean installation, then chipset drivers need installed first.

I suspect an issue with the usb ports.

You can try How to allow file and printer sharing past Comodo and see if that helps.

As I already said, ALL drivers have been downloaded and installed.  When I say all, I mean all: this includes the chipset drivers from Intel and both of the USB controller drivers from gigabyte (my motherboard manufacturer).

The USB ports work.  My keyboard and mouse are attached via USB.  When I connect my camera, various thumb drives, external hard drive or smartphone via USB they work.  Again - like I already said - I tested my USB ports already.

WINDOWS can see the printer when I plug it in, but the Dell installer cannot.

I hate to sound rude, but do you even read what I say?  I already told you all this.  Just like I said COMODO wasn't installed when I tried to set up the printer... why are you telling how to sync them up?  Comodo isn't the problem, it has nothing to do with it.

eflan,

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

eflan,

I did not delete you last post, the TOU team removed it because of the language. You should have been notified.

Do you have an AMD USB Audio Driver Filter or NVIDIA's Network Access Manager? If yes, unstall them.

You still haven't answered my question, now you delete my comments instead.

The drivers are installed properly.

According to the device manager, USB drivers are dated 04/08/11.  Chipset drivers are dated 21/12/2010.

Now why won't the Dell installer that supposedly works in Win 7 recognize that the printer has been plugged in when windows itself can see the printer?

As far as I can tell, I don't have either one.  Device manager just shows the audio drivers from Realtek, and USB drivers from Intel and Etron.

eflan,

Can the printer copy without being attached to the computer? Some models work like a copier, without being attached. I'm thinking that one of the Dell Series 9 ink cartridges is bad and this is causing the printer not to work.

Can you copy a document under the glass? Black and white and color?

Yeah, I can copy.

The printer worked last week with a different PC, and will work right now if I plug it into my laptop (running XP).

Windows 7 can tell its there, it just can't install the drivers since they're for Vista.  And the Dell driver installer (in compatibility mode) can't tell I plugged it in...

It would be so much nicer if Dell would've updated the driver instead of deciding that the vista ones are 'good enough'.

eflan,

See if the XP 64-bit drivers for the Dell 926 Printer work in the XP Compatibility mode
