thanks for your reply, but as I stated in my original post, I have model A960, not A940. Your answer pertains to the A940. My A960 does not have an encoder strip that I can see. My model does not match the pictures shown.
Yes, you do have the A960, but the A960 and A940 are virtually identical in this regard. You do in fact have an encoder strip that you can see, lift the lid of the unit and check again. You might need to use a flashlight, but it's there. If it's not there at all, then you definitely have a problem! ;) You should be able to follow the steps listed in the link I provided you for the A920, A940, and A960 models. Good luck, and come back if this doesn't solve your problem!
I'm still not sure what you're talking about, but a thin plastic strip has come loose and it's attached on one end to the back of the ink cartridges. I pulled it out all the way and I noticed that one end of it was torn off. That might be the part you were talking about. I am trying to find a place I can take this printer to so I can get it checked. Does Dell suggest any certain places? I called a Dell Store near me and they recommended a place. I called the place but they have not called me back. What can do about getting this printer checked?

That sounds like it's probably your encoder strip, or what's left of it. :( I think you might have found your problem...
I had the same problem with A940. (See my post on 6/17/05) Used your link. Directions seemed clear and easy. Did everything it said. Encoder strip looks like it is in place. Still get error 502.
What does it mean it shouldn't move? I don't see anything that clicks it in place. I can move it back out as easily as I put it in. What do I do now?
By the way I suggest that there be a support page listing error messages with links to how to fix them in the troubleshooting section of help index. I've spent over 4 hours researching this. The directions haven't helped but it would have saved me a lot of time if I had gotten them when I first started.
I agree that Dell support does not match its sales expertise. I like both my computer and printer and have bought 3 Dell laptops for friends. I feel that when I have spent that much money I deserve better service.
I agree with your comments. I gave up trying to get help fixing my 960. Dell could not suggest a place for me to take the printer, and they don't have that part available for order, so I had to buy another printer. Needless to say, I am not happy about that.
Dell is the most useless company in the world. People need to just stop buying their products and hopefully they will go out of business. Like that will ever happen.
This is an older post and Dell had started a New Forum and some links usually don't mtch anymore. I think this is what you're looking for.

Clean the Encoder Strip
Additional Information
Notice:
As you perform the following steps, be careful when handling the encoder strip as it can break easily.
It is possible that dust can gather on the encoder strip which will make it very difficult for the printer to determine where the carriage is on its track. To clean the encoder strip, perform the following steps:
Power down the printer and unplug the power.
Lift the cover on the printer.
Using a dry, lint free cloth, pinch the encoder strip on the right-hand side of the cartridge carriage and pull your fingers across it toward the right-hand side of the printer (Figure 1).
Figure 1: The Encoder Strip to the right of the cartridge carrier
Note:
The encoder strip is a narrow band of clear plastic and can be difficult to see without direct lighting.
Plug in the printer and power it on.
Open the cover to allow the cartridge carriage to center itself.
Using a dry, lint free cloth, pinch the encoder strip on the left-hand side of the cartridge carriage and pull your fingers across it towards the left-hand side of the printer. (Figure 2).

Why don't you make a new post. Tell me how you're trying to connect your A960 printer to your computer. Let me know if it's the same computer that crashed and if you got the USB problem corrected or not. This is very important. Tell me the make and model of your computer and operating system, too.

Your encoder strip is probably out of position. Try following this link and see if it helps:

I'm wondering if there are any new drivers for the A960 printer?
