Which version of Windows Media Player do you currently have on the PC? You may need to upgrade to the latest version to remedy your All-In-One center problems. This is due to a .dll file that was probably overridden by another software application. This only happens on PC's running Windows 2000, and is usually remedied by updating Windows Media Player to the latest version. Hope this helps, come back if it doesn't!
I have sp4 with the rollup and all the latest "critical patches". I ran the Microsoft Update when I first got problems to make sure I'm up to par.
I also went through the pain yesterday night to take out and uninstall my add-in boards one by one in case there was some HW conflict that the OS couldn't detect. No luck. (NIC, 1394 card, USB card, etc.) I also completely uninstalled and unplugged an HP scanner that I thought could interfere. An old 2nd harddrive that has been a little finicky was removed and uninstalled. Nothing helps. I have tried booting with PnP detection both by BIOS and by OS, resetting the CMOS in between. Nope. I also ran the Registry Mechanic to delete bad references in my registry and clean it up. The rest of the computer works fine, but the AIO Center will not start up. Nothing happens when I run the executable. If nothing else, it's really terrible SW that doesn't even spit out an error message!
I can do stuff where the AIO Center is not required, for instance I can print and load pictures from a picture memory stick into the photo studio, as well as do local operations on the printer (copy, look at the memory stick, ...). But I cannot scan. It doesn't work if I initiate the scan from the printer either. When pressing the green button (tried to both file and clip board) nothing happens that way either. Since I can copy, obviously the scanner itself works.
I really appreciate your help. Maybe I'm getting to the point where I have to realize the whole thing is beyond repair, but if there is a solution I'd love to save myself from the pain of sending it back and looking for something else.
I received my New Dell AIO 964 Printer yesterday. I did the Network Install (using the Dell Wireless 3300 Adapter) Everything installed fine on all three of my home computers all using Windows XP Professional. I was actually surprised there were no glitches! I used the supplied Setup CD's in the box.
Scanner software supplied worked fine and was able to scan several documents. Fax and Copier also worked great however Printer was way too slow! It took over 2 minutes just to print the Windows XP Test Page. I also noticed the auto paper feed is very loud. My first thought was a wireless network issue but noticed your comment about the slow print even with a USB cable connected. I switched to direct connect with a USB cable and still had the slow print times (no difference).
I downloaded and installed the Dell Firmware Update and updated Driver package. Now print times are much better! I also switched back to the Wireless Adapter and there are no delays or lags. Print times are fast and everything is running smooth. Only gripe is it's loud and although I did not select the option to install the Dell Ink Monitor software it appears it installed anyway and I get the pop-up printer window showing the ink level and print percentage! I haven't figured out how to turn off either!
I noticed there is also a Firmware Update for the 3300 Wireless Adapter however the one I received had the updated Firmware. It's required for the 964 AIO Printer.
Only other note is the Picture Bridge function to send files from the memory cards to the computer is not supported yet when using the printer on a wireless network. A message comes up on the screen saying a USB cable connection is required. The Picture Bridge did work fine from the printer.
I recommend installing the latest firmware. That makes a big difference. Best of Luck...
thanks for reply. I just downloaded and installed the firmware patch but it made no difference. The installation was reported as successful but it didn't solve my problem.
I checked another thing however. If you go to the online printer trouble shooter, there is a list of steps to verify. One of them is to make sure that the print spooler service and the Lexbce service are running. The spooler is but the Lexbce is not on my machine. The trouble shooter applies to a list of printers. AIO 964 wasn't listed specifically, but AIO 960 and a bunch of other Lexmark/Dell printers were. The question here: Should the Lexbce service be running in the background for AIO 964? I searched for any file containing "lexbce" and one file in the installation, "install/x86/engine.dll" matches.
Running DLL Explorer I could see that engine.dll is not loaded. Am I on to something here?
I searched all the processes and services running on my machine. There is no "lexbce" anywhere?? Only thing I show is "Print Spooler". Under msconfig I noticed "DLCJMON.EXE" and "MEMCARD.EXE" are the only two DELL files being run at startup.
Well, I don't have a dlcjmon.exe but I do have a dlcjcoms.exe.
Maybe it doesn't mean anything. This would be just about the time when I would expect that somebody from Dell that is monitoring this site will jump in and tell us the right answer!
PrintGuy007 and Cal, you have both been very helpful. I don't know if there is anything more to try, but if you think of something, please let me know.
Latest news. I have been in contact with Dell technical support. We have spent hours trying to resolve it. Dell technical support adviced me to contact the SW support center. The SW support center told me that they only do SW consulting and will not assist with faulty products. I called today to return the deadbeat printer, however Dell refuses to take it back due to some ididotic policy that you have to return it with in 21 days of Dell's invoice date (Note! not within 21 days of when you actually got the printer!) I have spend the two weeks I have owned the AIO 964 to try to get it to work. FYI I'm a reasonably skilled computer engineer so I can solve most problems. If in addition Dell's own technical staff cannot solve it, it's probably not easy.
The conclusion is that Dell wants me to sit on $300 worth of useless equipment and refuses to take it back. They are happy to send me a replacement, which of course will come with the same faulty software.
I have so far been very happy with Dell's products, but when they pull a scam like this I have to say I will be forever reluctant to deal with them again. I would advice anybody reading this to absolutely not buy any of their all-in-one printers. You will end up like me, with a lemon that only partially works. It can print but not scan. I paid $300 for this order and go equipment corresponding to what I could have bought at BestBuy for $50. Do not buy the All-In-One printers!
Does anyone know which Lexmark printer this is. It could be X7170 or X8350? I'll try to get the SW from them if somebody can tell me which printer it is.

Thanks Printboy,
I was running WMP 7.10 and just upgraded to latest, 9.0.
Unfortunately didn't work. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the AIO 964 SW again.
I appreciate your help, even if this one turned out to be a dead end. Any more ideas?
thanks
Knut

That is correct. I downloaded the file called R113115.EXE.
I see that there is now also a firmware update for the printer called R113235.EX, which I have not downloaded.
