"I then opened the setup utility and selected 'If fax tones are detected' and saved and exited the setup utility"
This is the problem right here! And it has nothing to do with you. You've simply stumbled across a bug in the Printer Setup Utility for the 962. The 'Auto Answer' enabled feature should be set only from the front panel of the 962 (using the actual physical button). The software button inside the PSU is leftover code from the previous generation of printer (the A960) that really only confuses the 962 when it is used. This was overlooked during the development cycle, and the button may still be removed if any additional software releases are provided for the 962. One of the known side effects of attempting to set the auto answer from within the PSU is automatically changing the 962 to answer on the first ring, it sounds like that is what you are experiencing here. My recommendation would be to not use this setting from within the PSU, you can still tweak your other settings from here, but I would simply ignore the 'If Fax tones are detected' button and leave it empty. Then ensure that your 'Auto Answer' is correctly enabled from the front panel of the 962 (light should be lit green). In this scenario, assuming everything else is set correctly, you should get the behavior that you are looking for when receiving a fax. Come back if you have any additional questions!
Do you mean the 962 has no 'If fax tones are detected' functionality and that this option in the Setup utility has no effect on my 962 at all. Is that not a backwards step with this model then, that the only auto answer functionality is 'Answer after 1/2/3/4/5 rings'?
If thats the case then would the following be true.
Say I set it for 'Answer after 5 rings' (which as I explained in another 962 thread sometimes answers after 5 and sometimes after 9 or 10! ??) If I make it to the phone before the fax picks up after 5 rings the printer does nothing whether it turns out to be a voice call or a fax. If I don't make it to the phone before the printer picks up and then pick up my handset, I have to endure the fax machine squeeling over what might turn out to be a voice call. In that case how do I get the fax off the line to listen to the call? Run in and change the printer from fax mode, switch printer off entirely or do what I did yesterday and get the caller to call back after I run in and switch off auto answer on the printer??
Or does the printer give up after 30 seconds or so of hearing no fax response tones on what turned out to be a voice call, in which case I just tell the caller to hold on till the fax stops interupting the call.
I just thought 'If fax tones are detected' was a great feature, that the 962 was always listening to every call recieved and if it was a fax then it took over the call and if it was voice the 962 did nothing. ie almost transparent auto fax recieve functionality. If you say thats not possible with this printer then I have to run in and out from the phone to the fax machine pressing buttons left right and centre depending on whether the call turns out to be a fax or voice call???
"Do you mean the 962 has no 'If fax tones are detected' functionality and that this option in the Setup utility has no effect on my 962 at all. Is that not a backwards step with this model then, that the only auto answer functionality is 'Answer after 1/2/3/4/5 rings'?"
No, that is NOT what I meant. The option to change the 'If fax tones are detected' should not even exist in the Printer Setup Utility. Not to say that the feature doesn't exist, rather that it can only be enabled and disabled using the 'Auto Answer' button on the front panel of the 962. This is due to the fact the 'Auto Answer' is actually more advanced than it's predecessor (the A960) when it comes to Auto Detect/Line listening features. Like I said before the software button in the PSU was accidentally left over from previous code for the A960, before the implementation of the front Op Panel 'Auto Answer' button (found on the 962). You need to simply ignore the 'If fax tones are detected' section of the Printer Setup Utility, and use the button on the front Op Panel.
"If thats the case then would the following be true.

I don't know anything about why it would be picking up after 9 or 10 rings when it is set to five. You might need to go back and check your settings from the front Op Panel of the 962 itself. Don't use the Printer Setup Utility again until you are sure your settings look good and are working by setting them on the 962 itself. This could be another quirky side effect of trying to change the 'If Fax tones are detected' setting in the Printer Setup Utility from previous attempts.
"If I make it to the phone before the fax picks up after 5 rings the printer does nothing whether it turns out to be a voice call or a fax. If I don't make it to the phone before the printer picks up and then pick up my handset, I have to endure the fax machine squeeling over what might turn out to be a voice call. Assuming you only have the 962 and telephones (No answering machines) throughout the house on the same line, the following should apply:
1. Set the 962 to 'answer fax after 5 rings' from the front Op Panel
2. From the front Op Panel, make sure the 'Auto Answer' button is enabled (light should be lit green). Again - DO NOT CHANGE THIS SETTING FROM THE PSU! It's important! ;)
Now, after 5 rings the 962 WILL answer the incoming call, regardless of it being a fax or a voice call.
- If it is a fax, the 962 will receive and print it.
- If it is a regular voice call, the caller on the other end will hear the fax tones as the 962 attempts to answer the call as a fax. Obviously, nothing will be received/printed. However, in the event you are struggling to get to the phone and are still wishing to take the call, once you have answered on the other phone, you only need to press the 'Cancel' button from the front Op Panel of the 962. The fax tones will then stop and you will be able to continue the call as a normal voice converstation.
- If you get to the phone before the 5th ring and it's a regular voice call, nothing will happen with the 962. It will ignore this call and let you go about your conversation.
- If you get to the phone before the 5th ring and it's an incoming fax, then the 962 will intercept the call and receive and print the fax.
"I just thought 'If fax tones are detected' was a great feature, that the 962 was always listening to every call recieved and if it was a fax then it took over the call and if it was voice the 962 did nothing. ie almost transparent auto fax recieve functionality. This feature does work, it's just all about finding a scenario and combination that works for what you are trying to do. It is definitely a step forward from the listening features that the A960 has, you just need to be sure that you don't try to enable the 'Auto Answer' features from inside the PSU. ;) I think this is what is leading to some of your quirky problems getting this all set up. Once you get up and running you'll see you will very rarely (if ever) find yourself needing to push buttons on the 962 in any receive scenario, fax or otherwise. Good Luck! And don't forget to come back if you have any additional questions/concerns...

Thank you for you patience Printboy! I think half my confusion was because I mis-interpretted what 'If fax tones are detected' meant when you explained it to me in another thread.
So lets see if I have this right. 962 set to auto answer after 5 rings from the front panel.
I get to the phone before the 5th ring ie I answer before fax does. In this case if its a voice call the 962 does nothing. If however it is an incoming fax the 962 is listening in and takes over with no other user intervention. (And this is the meaning and extent of the 'If fax tones detected' functionality)
I don't get to the phone before the 5th ring ie The fax answers before I do. (Now assuming that 99% of calls recieved are voice calls here and I need to answer all of them) In this case even though the fax has already answered I will lift my handset. If I find its actually an incoming fax(which tbh will be rarely) I need do nothing more and the 962 will process the fax. If however it is a voice call which it invariably will be, I tell the caller to hold on while I go to the other room to press 'Cancel' on the front panel of the 962.
So by setting the 962 to 5 rings, hopefully I will be able to answer first most of the time. TBH I wish the 962 actually had a 10 ring setting as this would mean I'd get to the phone first 99.9% of the time.
Then again, Maybe I shouldn't be using auto answer at all then as tbh there will be someone to take calls here 99% of the time but not always able to take the call within 5 rings.
ie Rather than explaining scenario's to the rest of the family as to what they should do for voice calls or fax calls depending on whether they answer first or the 962 does (Which would seem to be the case with the auto answer function of the 962), I should merely tell them what to do for the 1 in a 100 calls we recieve that is a fax. ie if you answer and hear a fax on the other end of the line, run into the 962 in the other room and Press 3355# (according to the 962 user manual) and then the 962 will take over, recieve and print the incoming fax. Would this be correct??
"So lets see if I have this right. 962 set to auto answer after 5 rings from the front panel.
I get to the phone before the 5th ring ie I answer before fax does. In this case if its a voice call the 962 does nothing. Correct!

Correct again!

That's right! Now you are getting it! :D
"Then again, Maybe I shouldn't be using auto answer at all then as TBH there will be someone to take calls here 99% of the time but not always able to take the call within 5 rings."
You know, you may be right. You might want to look into the 'Manual Receive' option in your scenario. If you rarely receive faxes, this might serve you best. All you need to do here is ensure that 'Auto Answer' is off (light will NOT be lit green) and then the line will continue ringing until you (or someone in your family) attempts to pick up. If the call is a fax, simply press 3355# (on the phone or the 962 dialpad) and it will send the fax to the 962. The only downside here is; you wouldn't be able to receive faxes if nobody was home. Then again, if you knew you were going to be away from home and were expecting a fax, you could simply enable the 'Auto Answer' by pressing the button on the front Op Panel ;) It's your call though, whatever works best for you! Feel free to respond with any additional questions...

I have the problem that I cannot receive faxes automatically. I was told by Jason at Tech. Support I had to arrange for a special ring through phone compnay which sounded very wrong and drastic for such an easy task. Every HP printer I ever had did this easily. Anyway, I have my answering machine set to answer after 4 rings. I can only make that pick up after 2 or 4 rings (no other number). I have the printer/fax set to pick up after 5 rings. With it this way, the Dell 962 never receives the fax. I just get the fax beeping noise on my answering machine. I tried changing printer/fax to pick up after 3 rings (i.e., less rings than answering machine which is set to 4), but now I cannot receive any calls - callers get fax noise. I spent 2 hours on the phone with tech support and finally was told to change answering machine to 3 rings and Dell printer/fax to 5 and it'll work. Apparently, according to James in Tech. Support that is the ONLY way it will work?~!* There's nothing in the book that states this (also if so, why did you make options of 1,2,3, or 5 rings if it ONLY works this way). However, as I stated I cannot change my anwering machine to answer after 3 rings, only 2 or 4. So basically this printer/fax WILL NOT auto answer? Seems like a BIG glitch. Any solutions? Otherwise, will have to return printer. Am a business owner and must have auto answer and receive voice calls.

You were right. This is drastic and NOT needed for your scenario.
"I have the printer/fax set to pick up after 5 rings. With it this way, the Dell 962 never receives the fax. I just get the fax beeping noise on my answering machine."
In this scenario, you appear to be set up correctly to receive faxes as you desired. Are you sure that 'Auto Answer' is enabled (light should be lit green) from the front operator panel of the 962?
"I tried changing printer/fax to pick up after 3 rings (i.e., less rings than answering machine which is set to 4), but now I cannot receive any calls - callers get fax noise."
Don't do this! You won't be able to receive calls correctly with the answering machine in this scenario. (As you obviously found out ;))
Tell me a little more about how you are attempting to change/save your fax receive settings on your 962. Are you doing everything from the front operator panel, or are you using the software based Printer Setup Utility? Thanks for the extra info!
Thanks for replying. Yes, I am sure the Auto Answer light is green (i.e, on).
Tell me a little more about how you are attempting to change/save your fax receive settings on your 962. Are you doing everything from the front operator panel, or are you using the software based Printer Setup Utility? Thanks for the extra info!
I do everything via the front operator panel. I'm not sure if I said this before, one Tech. Support person said to set my 962 to answer after 5 rings, and my answering machine after 3 rings (no other numbers, 5 and 3 only (respectively)). But my answering machine will only allow me to choose 2 and 4. Ugh. I'd get another answering machine, but since at leat 3 tech supprt reps have been unable to help me I'm wondering if this 5/3 solution is truly correct. This should be basic functionality and not this complicated.
Thanks again for your reply and attempting to help me with this.
Excellent, this is the preferred method. Just making sure you were doing it that way!
"one Tech. Support person said to set my 962 to answer after 5 rings, and my answering machine after 3 rings (no other numbers, 5 and 3 only (respectively)). No, this is NOT correct. It doesn't necessarily have to be three and five, the answering machine only needs to be set to a number of rings less than the 962. That's all, there is no 'magic number combo' or anything you are missing here! ;)
Tell me a little more about how all of your phone lines are physically connected to the answering machine/962/telephones etc. Thanks for the extra info!
I have a
Dell A960 I can't get it to receive faxes at all. I called Dell a while ago and the support person told me to press 3355# on the fax keypad to manually receive faxes. This no longer works unfortunately, nor does the auto receive fax option, sometimes when I press the 3355# buttons the machine clicks and the screen message says it's receiving but eventually it just stops and then "remote fax error" message is displayed. Any ideas how I could fix this. Sadly I am past my warranty period so I can't return it.

Would this be correct??

Thanks.

"I have the problem that I cannot receive faxes automatically. I was told by Jason at Tech. Support I had to arrange for a special ring through phone compnay which sounded very wrong and drastic for such an easy task."
You were right. This is drastic and NOT needed for your scenario.

In this scenario, you appear to be set up correctly to receive faxes as you desired. Are you sure that 'Auto Answer' is enabled (light should be lit green) from the front operator panel of the 962?

Don't do this! You won't be able to receive calls correctly with the answering machine in this scenario. (As you obviously found out ;))
Tell me a little more about how you are attempting to change/save your fax receive settings on your 962. Are you doing everything from the front operator panel, or are you using the software based Printer Setup Utility? Thanks for the extra info!

Thanks for replying. Yes, I am sure the Auto Answer light is green (i.e, on).
