Black Cartridge Not Recognized?

I purchased a new black cartridge series 5 High Yield for my Dell AIO 942.

The ink was not recognized. Tried turning off the machine, cleaning it, waiting so many minutes, plugging it in etc etc no success.

I read on another thread that most printers require both black and color cartridges to work and the printer was telling me to install both cartridges so I went ahead and purchased a color ink cartridge, even though I know this printer has worked in the past with only black ink.

I installed the colored cartridge and it was immediately recognized but still not the black.

I went to staples and returned the black cartridge for a new, came home today and still.. no success for the colored cartridge.

I cleaned the prongs inside of the printer previously with the first cartridge and that never helped.

So one thing I have noticed is that when I remove both ink cartridges, the lid will close with ease on both.

When I insert the color cartridge, the lid will still close with ease.

Though... when I insert a black cartridge into the black slot and try to close the lid.. it has problems.. as though the ink cartridge itself is JUST too big.

I compared the size of both color and black cartridges and they are identical. I took a flash light and mirror inside of the printer to see if anything was blocking the way or if anything was bent etc.. but they're exactly identical. Both have a metal prong inside and are clear of any debris.

I just don't get it.. I cannot figure out why it will not close completely.

It will close if I push it down.. but it is lose enough to where if I open the lid on the color cartridge and then close it, either on the first or second try, the vibration from opening the color lid will automatically open the lid to the black cartridges.

Is this what could be causing the printer to not recognize the ink and how in the world do I fix this??

thelackof,

The color cartridge is not a Dell Photo cartridge is it?

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. Plug everything back in. This will reset any error messages the printer has.

Power on the printer. Open the printer and take out the Dell Series 5 Black cartridge. make sure all the tape is off the cartridge and put the cartridge back in. Now do the same for the Dell Series 5 color cartridge.

Close the printer. It should print an alignment page. Any error messages?

Black cartridge = black side(left side)          color cartridge = color side(right side)

Photo cartridge = black side(left side)         color cartridge = color side(right side)

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

It is also possible to get a new ink cartridge with a bad sensor. Please take it to the place of purchase for a refund or a replacement one.

Hey Rick,

the color cartridge is also made by Dell.

The only error message I receive when both cartridges are installed is "Cartridge Missing - Install a black or photo print cartridge on the left side."

I have unplugged and reset the machine a few times but with no success and this is the second black cartridge that I have purchased, all with the same error.

thelackof,

Remove the power brick, for 60 seconds, from the back of the printer to reset any error messages the printer is getting.
