Cannot install a new printer until installer is 'finished' with another

About 3 years ago, I tried to install a Lexmark x6170 all-in-one printer on a Delll Inspiron 1420 but the Lexmark driver would not work on the Vista operating system. So, I deleted what I thought was everything associated with the failed install.  To this day, I am not able to install another printer on this laptop, because the 'installer' software produces a window with the message 'Windows needs to install driver software for your Unknown Device'.  Lately, I took the time to try again to install a new printer and got the message that the other printer must finish installing first! So, since it was only that Lexmark that I had ever tried to install, something bearing the printer name is somewhere so that it will not let another printer installation happen until the Lexmark 'installation' is complete.  I no longer have that printer nor the installation disc.  If there is a cure, I would be pleased to know about it.

More details about the Printer installation: (1) Now I want to install my Dell 1130 Laser printer on my Inspiron 1420, which has the old printer installation mess on it. The Dell 1130 has been working well with my Inspiron 1501 laptop for over a year. It is an excellent unit for my office use. It is robust, reliable and has a low operating cost, in my opinion.

Please follow the below mentioned steps to uninstall the existing printer drivers from the computer and reinstalling the Dell 1130 Laser printer drivers.

Please disconnect the USB cable that runs from the printer to the computer and uninstall the Lexmark printer driver by using uninstaller software. Here is a link to download one.

Install the software and uninstall the printer driver using the Advanced Uninstall option from the software. It is third party uninstaller software used to uninstall the drivers/programs from the computer.

The software prompts asking you to delete the Registry keys corresponding to the printer driver. Select all and delete them. Restart the computer to remove any traces of the printer software.

Perform the steps below and ensure that the services required for the printer to work are started.

1. Press the “Windows + R” to launch the run window.

2. Type “Services.msc” in the run window and hit the Enter key.

Right click each service mentioned below, click properties. Set the startup type as “Automatic” from the drop down menu and click “Start”. Please click “Apply” to save the changes.

The services to be enabled are:

•Human Interface Devices (HID).

•Printer Spooler.

•RPC (Remote Procedure Call).

•RPC Locator (Remote Procedure Call Locator).

•Windows image acquisition (WIA).

•Windows Installer.

Please install the drivers for Dell 1130 Laser printer using the cd or if you do not have the disc, please use this link: http://dell.to/ZroNur

NOTE: Please do not connect the printer using the USB cable to the computer prior to installing the drivers.

Please copy the above mentioned link, paste it in the address bar of the new internet explorer window.

Select the operating system of your computer from the list.
Save the file to the desktop.
Double-Click on the downloaded file.
Click “Yes”, when the utility prompts to extract the files.
Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
Connect the printer using the USB cable when prompted.
Try to print and check.
