Can't install a driver

Trying to help a friend get a used Dell J740 inkjet printer working with her Dell PC running Windows XP (Version 5.1 Service Pack 3).

She doesn't have an installation CD and although the Plug and Play wizard correctly identifies the printer it fails to find a driver. So I downloaded the J740 driver manually from Dell's website.

The download unpacks OK but halfway through the actual installation process it fails. Added complication: my friend is French and so is her Windows installation. So the error message is: "Le programme d'installation ne peut pas copier le fichier DLBJSTRN.DLL". Which means "The installation program cannot copy the file DLBJSTRN.DLL"

Telling it to skip that file results in the same message for all subsequent files.

Checked that her user profile has admin status and tried downloading all Windows updates for the computer but the J740 installer stops at the same place every time. Anyone know what's going on?

Thanks...

bhancill,

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs in the queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Uninstall the printer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Down the FRENCH J740 XP DRIVERS.

Install the drivers. You should get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on)
