I changed it to print directly to the printer and stopped the spooling first, that seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks for your help on this, it has been really bugging me. My sister has the same printer and I checked with her she has no problem with this and is not using the spool first setting but printing directly. It is usually print jobs that would cause the problem when it would start with letter size paper and switch to legal size. I have the dual tray and have it set to print by PDF paper size.
I have no idea which drive I am using, can you tell me where to look to find out. I have everything pretty much set by the factory settings, so whatever Dell sent me is where we are at.
There is nothing after the Dell printer name and I do have it set as my default printer. There is only 1 entry for the Dell printer. It identifies the printer as "Dell Laser Printer 1710".
Does anyone know if this printer will work with Win 8? At ALL?! =,( .. My son has lent it to me as my inkjet is out of ink temporarily (cartridges are ordered and in the mail). NO amt of tinkering has let me print more than huge blocks in shades of gray to black. It works fine on his various Linux-based systems but NOT on my Asus Win 8 laptop. First time I've EVER had a Win ONLY sys and this laser won't print. My inkjet is prob'y just as ancient but it prints just fine just that I REALLY need these docs soonest. Any ideas anyone?

So which is it...... a 1710 or 1710n
The 1710 only has USB and Parallel connections.
The 1710n has USB, Parallel, and Network connections.
Does your printer have the optional tray installed?
I'm wondering how you're getting away with printing mixed size jobs?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you..... my boss expects me to go make some money now and then. Go figure :smileywink:
Have you been able to associate the size of the print job to this incident?
In other words, do a bunch of small print jobs cause this, or large jobs, or mixed jobs?

Oh.... and one more thing....
You say you're printing PDF files. Are you using the PCL driver or the PS driver?

Not sure I helped much.....
Is all you print is PDF files?
If so, you may want to set "printer-name"_PS as your default printer, instead of the PCL driver.

Click Start > Control Panel
After the C/P opens, click Printers and Faxes
If another window opens, you'll see each installed printer listed.
If a list opens, you'll see each installed printer listed.
There are probably two entries for the "Dell Laser Printer 1710"
One has the letters PS appended to the printer name. This is the PostScript driver.
The other might say PCL, more likely..... nothing. This is the PCL driver.
Right-click the printer item appended with PS and select "Set as Default Printer"

My bad..... the non-networked version does not include the PostScript drivers. Sorry.....
I guess there's nothing else to worry about then.
Happy Printing !!
