Dell 5100 CN - Drum misplaced

Hi,
I have a Dell 5100 CN. When opening the machine I noticed that someone in my office has replaced the drum but had placed it incorrectly. Now I can't remove the drum at all. Any suggestions?

Thank you

jeancris,

Have you beaten the person severely who installed the drum incorrectly?  The old drum unit should work quite well for this task.

The only suggestion is to use enough care when removing the drum unit that you do not damage any of the other internal components of your printer.  You may have to damage the new drum unit in order to remove it without damaging any other internal components.  After you have removed the incorrectly installed drum unit, and have purchased another one (since you will most likely damage it when removing it), prohibit the elrod who messed it up in the first place from ever even looking at your printer again.  Not even a passing glance should be allowed.

jeancris,

I like BigBrother's idea about the beating, but beat the person with the defective drum...... it should leave some interesting colored bruising.... :smileysurprised:

OK. Time to get serious. The only thing that will prevent the drum assy from sliding upward and out of the printer is if the Developer frame does not retract away from the back of the drum assy when opening the top drum cover lid.

Open and close this lid. (if it won't move and/or seems like it's binding, STOP, or you may cause damage.)

You should see the developer frame move towards the back of the drum assy lid as you close it, and away froom the drum assy as you open it.

If the developer frame does not do this, it usually means that the developer frame slides have been damaged.

I'll take some pictures and re-post here later this morning.

OK..... pictures taken, edited, and posted.

See these links:

Developer Frame Motion

Left-Right frame slides

Broken Slide

I suspect one or both of the Dev frame slides have "jumped the track" (popped out of the guide channel) or have been broken. Better hope it's the former because I'm not sure if Dell carries these sliders for field repairs.

If one of the slider pins has jumped the track, it can be carefully be wedged back to return functionality.

Take some pictures of this area and I'll be glad to have a look.

Any more questions...... gimme a shout !!

Any ideas on how to get the drum out?

It is "caught" on one side only - so won't lift out - obviously we did something bad we pulled it & put it back yesterday. I have a new drum - but can't seem to get out the old one - I don't know how to push the developer back out of the way!!

Thx

Take a look at the pictures posted in my earlier reply..... the left and right side frame.

They're a little dark, but the pins at the top of each slider at each side of the developer frame should but inside the tracks on each side of the lid arms. If not, that's why the developer frame is not shifting rearward.

CAREFULLY torque the slider arm until the pin fits in the track, then watch the developer frame as you raise the drum lid.

The Broken Slide picture is what I suspect you will find in your printer.
