Dell 968 AIO - fax

Have a Dell 968 AIO that has been working perfectly; except now when I am trying to fax from computer (printing is OK) via the File/Print/FaxDell968AIOPrinter. I have the "Dell fax solution software" that opens in the task bar (running); but the window does not open to enter the details. Only way to close is ALT+CTRL+DLT.

Have tried several times to uninstall and re-install but always the same problem. What prevent the window to open ?

If someone can help I would be greatful.

HD,

Try reinstalling the printer using the instructions located at...

968 & 968w All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

As for faxing, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the Fax Folder. In the Fax Folder, right click on setup.exe and left click run as administrator. This will install the Fax program.

or try using...

BVRP PhoneTools for Faxing

Hi Rick,

thanks for quick reply. Have tried with the original disk that came with printer. cannot run as administrator as he is asking for password, which I do not have; although I am the only one on this computer and am acting as "computer administrator". Have tried via the current user but nothing moves (CD not running). Suspect because the program is already installed (in the taskbar underneath... but the window does not open to enter the details for fax (name, nr, ...).  I have got the feeling that it is not due to the Dell Printer software; but something interfering.

Could that be NIS 2010 that prevent from the window to open ?

If you have got some idea I would appreciate.

Hello Rik, have looked at it, it is NIS 2007 and I am 2010. On the other hand printer and scan are working fine, so it is maybe a question of some "pop-up windows" that would be rejected ? I am still under XP SP3. Could it be that I have changed a parameter in XP that would prevent that specific window to open ? or port problem ?

I really believe that the software is properly installed, because if I go in Start/Printer Dell/Dell 968AIO Printer/Fax solutions Dell (or something like that, as it is French), I can open the prgrm. If I click "send a fax" , he goes up to select a document, then I get the message "cannot convert the file ... to fax format".

Strange no ?

Any further hints ?

Thanks in advance

Hugues,

You said...

then I get the message "cannot convert the file ... to fax format".

Makes me believe you need an OCR Program.

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Hi Rick, thanks for info.
It's gone midnight here so I will try tomorrow.

In the meantime, I did uninstall the printer and re-installed it and during the process I got the message "A problem occured during hardware installation. Your ... might not work properly".

Will keep you informed tomorrow. As I beleive you are in the US, I wish you a nice evening.

Hello Rik,

Back on the same subject.  I have tried to solve all week-end with all your suggestions but without success. I have ABBYY installed. Again, all works well, printing, scanning from the computer, BUT NOT FAXING. The printer itself has nothing wrong as I installed it on another computer and it works perfect.

Again, here, when I try to fax with "Fax Dell 968AIO Printer" from the computer, it opens an icon on the taskbar (with clock) and an icon "Dell fax solution software" on the bottom of the screen (like for the other prgrms running); BUT DO NOT open a window !!

I have gone to Event Viewer and get the Print error message:

The document Microsoft Word - Document1 owned by Hugues Dicker failed to print on printer Fax Dell 968 AIO Printer. Data type: NT EMF 1.008. Size of the spool file in bytes: 65536. Number of bytes printed: 0. Total number of pages in the document: 1. Number of pages printed: 0. Client machine: \\PCS3. Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 6 (0x6).

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

When clicking on the link, I get:

Category:   None

Company name:   MS Corp.

Date:     11/01/2010

Event ID:    6161

File name:    xpsp2res.dll

File version:    5.1.2600.5512

Product name:   MS Windows Oper...

Product version:   5.1.2600.5512

Source:    Print

Time:   16:50:33

Type :   Error

I have spent hours on Internet trying to find a solution but without success. Could it be the file "xpsp2res.dll" being dammaged ?? I do not want to touch it until I am sure.

Thanks in advance.

Hugues,

Have you tried testing going back to a restore point to see if you can get this to work?

Hi Todd,

thanks for suggestion; but this is the first thing I have tried to do but, unfortunately, without success.

What happens when you try?  Does the restore point fail or does it work but not resolve the issue?

Hi Todd,

I did have to format the computer in November 09 and I have tried to restore to that date (after all installations) but could not.

Got the message "Restoration incomplete. Cannot be restored to ... No change have been made to your computer."

Don't agree Todd,

it is my system, my account is as "computer administrator". Computer automatically opens on my session and I never had any problem to install softwares. I have installed the Dell Printer sotware without any problem as it works for printing and scanning. Just this bl... windows "Dell fax solution software" that does not open.

Okay, just so I'm clear on this, you are not the administrator and can't install software as the admin, nor do restore points?   It may be that you need the administrative privileges to install the software needed to fax correctly.

Is this your system or just one you're working on?
