Dell A960 Printer - Cannot Unlock Scanner

Question

Trying to help an (elderly!) neighbor with a new Dell Dimension 2400 with an A960 printer.  The read-out on the printer continues to read 'Unlock Scanner and Press Power'.  I have made sure the scanner is unlocked (per the manual), but when I restart the printer the same error message comes up.  The other problem is that it is connected via a USB cable but when I try to send something to the printer, it says it's connected via a parallel port and to reconfigure the software to utilize a USB port.   Anyone out there with the same problems?  Should I uninstall the printer and try again?  Any ideas appreciated :) ... by myself, as well as this 80-year old neighbor :).

I think the first thing I would try is to re-install the printer driver. That has solved similar problems for me and others on this forum.
