Jude2425,

Glad your daughter got her printer working with her new laptop with Windows 7. :emotion-21: Thanks for posting back. With Windows 7, sometimes you have to install drivers/software in the compatibility mode to get things working.

Take care,

Rick

YES - IT REALLY WORKED!

After up-grading to Windows 7, from Vista, I spent 4 hours trying to install this printer. The support levels from Dell are really very poor for this printer. Crucially I did not read your small print:

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

If I had, I may have saved a few very frustrating hours!

Thanks

 AdamcJones,

Glad you got it working! :emotion-21: Thanks for posting back. With Windows 7, you may need to install more drivers/software in the compatibility mode, so it's a procedure you'll remember to use. And Dell has this printer on the list that says it's NOT compatible with Windows 7 Microsoft Windows 7 Compatability With Dell Printers

Take care,

OMG Pudgyone...you are the best!! Thanks so much for your help. I downloaded and ran the patch and installed the Vista 64-bit drivers and my 924 printer is running like a champ with Windows 7. It was even easier than your instructions. I'm so glad I didn't have to buy a new printer!

Hi Rick,

After all the misery, I decided to wait a while before trying again, but today I finally did, as follows:

  • uninstalled the G-Data antivirus
  • restarted my computer
  • ran the patch
  • restarted my computer
  • checked if the printer was actually removed (Devices and printers)
  • stopped the Windows firewall
  • inserted the installation disk
  • set the properties of the setup.exe file to Vista compatibility mode (did not check Run as Administrator)
  • right-clicked the setup.exe file and chose Run as Administrator
  • connected the printer when prompted (printer was on)

Still... it made no difference. The same thing happened as always. Some files are installed, even some uninstall-files, but not the printer-driver. The printer shows up in Devices and printers, but with the error message that the driver is not installed. The printer is not in the drop down list when I try to print something.

Any new ideas? :emotion-42:

Still gratefull for all your attempts to help me!

PS: are you sure that the automatic attempt of Windows to install the printer driver does not interfere with my manual installation process? The printer shows up in the Devices and printers section (whith error symbol) before my manual installation has finished...

CriticEye,

Does your computer have AMD USB Audio Driver Filter or NVIDIA's Network Access Manager? These programs need uninstalled in the control panel, if you have them.

Just did a little thinking. Wonder what would happen if you disconnected the printer, ran the patch(printer cleanup utility) until prompted to restart your computer. Before restarting yor computer, you went to...

Start, control panel, regional and language options and changed it to English(United States) then restarted your computer. Installed the Vista 64-bit drivers in the compatibility mode. See if it works. If so, then go to start, control panel, regional and langusge options and change it back to Dutch. Will the printer still work?

Searching for Dell 924 64-bit Dutch drivers is really hard to do. I'm surprised the Dutch 924 Printer disk doesn't install the correct drivers.

 CriticEye,

Windows Update might be able to find a driver for the printer that will work but you may or may not have all the working functions.

Hi Rick,

As far as I know/can see, I do not have AMD USB Audio Driver Filter or NVIDIA's Network Access Manager. I do have an NVIDIA driver, but cannot find anything named Network Access Manager.

I tried to follow your link to the Vista 64-bit drivers, but I get a 'Page not found' message (at this moment). At the Dell website I can only find Vista 32-bit drivers...

 CriticEye,

Dell's website was having issues today, so it may or may not be back working. Try at a later time.

Hi Rick,

The website was working again today, so I tried again and with no luck.

I am totally sick of it, so I give up. :emotion-41:

I will set my system language back to Dutch and reinstall my G-Data anti-virus software. I was happy with that so far, so I will not use another anti-virus program yet.

Thanks for trying to help me.

CriticEye,

I made an IdealStorm Idea for Universal Printer Drivers for both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems, hopefully if will eventually get some more votes and get noticed enough for Dell to consider this Idea. It's a shame to have the printer and no drivers that work in another language.

Take care,

Rick

Thanks, I hope they will act! I hate throwing away a perfectly good printer only because I can't get it to work on my new OS.
