domhnall,

Since you did a fresh installation of the operating system, did you install the drivers in the proper order?

The Desktop/Notebook Utility needs to be installed first, then the chipset drivers. If they are NOT installed first, then the rest of the drivers will fail to install.

Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.

:emotion-55: Hint :emotion-55: When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card

QuickSet(Laptop only)

After the drivers are installed and working properly, restart your computer.

Make sure your computer has all the Windows updates. I have the custom ones too, especially the .net framework, needed to run many applications. Also make sure to have the latest Java.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch, a MUST on Vista machines, until it prompts you to restart your computer

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

Vista 64-bit Drivers.

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers.(ONLY install the drivers you need) You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

Thanks for the reply,

I dont think I did install them in that order. Do I have to re-install the OS, or can I just re-install the drivers in the order you specified?

Thanks for the help, it solved another problem I had with the audio. I've followed your instructions word for word, yet I am having the same problem. I remember that my printer worked on my hard drive by just plugging the printer in, it set up everything automatically (without me installing by disk or installing drivers for the printer). Any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks again

domhnall,

Install the chipset drivers and the Desktop/Notebook Utility and then the rest of the drivers, you should be ok. Check in the device manager when finished to make sure there are no yellow exclaimination marks or red x's.

Make sure to get Windows Updates, .net framework and the latest Java.

Restart your computer, then run the patch until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer, then install the proper drivers.

Unfortunately, I'm still having the same problem with the printer installation after following your instructions. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop with Windows XP Service Pack 3. Thanks for the help

domhnall,

Make sure the printer is disconnected. Right click on the patch, left click run as administrator and run it until you're prompted to restart your computer.

Restart your computer.

Install the downloaded drivers ONLY. If you install other drivers, they may now get installed correctly and then cause it not to work.

If this doen't work, then the make and model of your computer and operating system will be helpful. The printer installs on almost all the computers unless the computer has an issue.

domhnall,

Please note, I have added an extra step this time.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch, a MUST on Vista machines, until it prompts you to restart your computer

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

Vista 64-bit Drivers.

All other drivers

  • Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

  • Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

  • Starting at the bottom, USB Root Hubs, and working your way to the top, USB Universal Controllers, un-install everything in that section.

  • Restart your computer. Windows will find everything again and correct the problem one. Please be patient. The new hardware wizard may work 3-5 minutes before it's done.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

See if I do the OS repair, does it mean I have to re-install all my programs, lose my files (which means I'd back them up) and then re-install all of the drivers again? thanks

domhnall,

I would then suggest you do a repair of your Operating system. Disconnect all USB devices and follow these instructions.

Insert the operating system disk and restart your computer. If you do not have one and are the origional owner and live in the United States, click below my signature and request a set.

Press any key to boot from CD.

Choose Install.

Do the agreement.

Now choose repair. Leave the disk in until you see the Welcome Screen. Takes about 35 minutes.

You'll need to get all your Windows Updates, again.

After you have all the updates, then restart your computer and install the printer.

domhnall,

Doing the repair like I described above and being on a Dell computer, you most likely will not lose any files and folders, just Windows Updates. I do suggest backing up files and folders as this should be a normal practice. I have most of my files and folders on disks so if my hard drive failed today, I could be up and running in no time.

This will only repair Windows and the drivers and everything else will stay intact.(If using another brand computer, other than Dell, you'd lose everything and have to start over.)

kevincalhn4,

This was NOT your post and then you replied to this post this way. If you have a problem with your printer, then make a new post. Please state the make and model of your computer(s0 and operating systems and how you're trying to connect your printer, make and model and how you're trying to connect your printer to your computer.

Are you using refilled ink cartridges?

Please respond all this information in a new thread.

Thanks,

Rick
