Does the printer do this when you try to copy a document under the glass? B&W and color?

Rick, I had not tried copying, but when I did I noticed that it only happened on the black and white portions of the page. I just replaced the black cartridge and not it's working fine. No more bars. It's odd because I put that black cartridge in about 3 weeks ago and it's been working fine until yesterday.

I wasn't thinking at the time but, are you using Dell Series 5 ink cartridges, refilled or a generic brand. There might be a slight chance a refilled or generic brand cartridge would possibably cause this.

If this only happened during scanning and copying, then I'd suspect the scanner bulb going bad.

I was thinking more about the printhead slowly going out or the printer rollers, then a replacement printer would be the best option.

Yes I'm using the Dell Series 5 cartridges. I've been buying them at Staples, but the last time I bought them at Walmart to save a couple of bucks. This is the first time I've had this problem so I'm hoping it was just a bad cartridge.

I didn't try scanning. I first noticed the problem just doing a simple print file. Then after you asked about the copying I realized it happened then too.

If it happens again I'll just get another printer. I really need one that prints 11x17 anyway.

My Dell 964 Printer work working really good. I then got a Dell V715w Wireless Printer and the 964 went in the closet for a while. My wife had me get rid of it. You may want to try the  Dell Printer Learning Center maybe it will help you with deciding what is the right type of printer you'd like to replace it with.
