Jenn, try this and it should fix you up. Let me know though if it does or does not!

1) Uninstall the HP and the 540.
2) Reinstall the HP, then turn off and disconnect the HP from the PC.
3) Reinstall the 540 while the HP is OFF and NOT CONNECTED to the PC.
4) Once the 540 install is complete and working they can turn on and reconnect the HP to the PC.

The problem is caused by the HP getting gibberish lodged in its queue upon install of the 540. Basically the HP is responding to install messages meant for the 540. The smiley faces are remnant of that confusion and cannot be easily removed from the queue via the control panel (gibberish doesn't register as a true job but prints anyhow). The best way to get rid of it once it has occurred is to destroy the queue completely (uninstall) then reinstall the 540 with the HP off and physically disconnected from the system so that HP cannot pick up the data.

I have the same problem, HP Deskjet 970 and a Dell Photo 540. I uninstalled and re-installed everything using the method described above, and it worked like a charm. Until I rebooted and tried printing again. Then right back to the same problem, I've done it twice so far and it works great the first time but then reverts back to the "smiley faces" and multiple pages... Any way I can prevent this from happening? Both are USB connected. Thanks in advance.

I have a dell photo 540 and a lexmark x1150 printer.  When i install my photo printer my lexmark does not work and i have to keep uninstalling both and installing lexmark to get it working again which is very frustrating.  Both has usb ports - anyone know how to fix this

This solution orignally worked for the 2 printers, but within a week I had the same problem.  Now I've resorted to using the photo printer without it being connected to the computer.  I must say, I'm disappointed but have received no other solutions to this problem.

After reading these posts I am going to continue using my 540 the way I have been. As a stand alone printer. I have a card reader connected to my computer and transfer pictures to print to a compact flash card. Then put the card in my 540. I don't think I am going to try to connect it to my computer after reading the posts. One thing I did notice in doing things the way I am is the picture file reads as corrupt if I try to edit it while the file is on my compact flash card. If I edit the file in a folder on my computer, save it, then copy it to the flash media it works really good. I have enough things to make my life harder wtihout adding more problems to it. I am glad I read the posts here before I connected it to my computer.

I have just recovered from a near-disaster caused by installing the Photo printer 540 on my Dimension 8400.

Within a few days of this installation, the computer started to simply shut down by itself after being on for 2-3 minutes, and could not be restarted without holding the power button; the button flashed orange, and all diagnostic lights on the back were dark.  I tried reinstalling the latest software, and this lead to a stand-by/shut down that could not be reversed.  I actually unplugged everything from the unit and attempted to reseat all boards and memory.  The computer would then boot up, but shut itself down as before.  I was able to reboot and quickly uninstalled all 540 software.  The computer has functioned well since.

I do have an HP 3030 all in one attached as well; could this lead to a conflict so severe as to keep the computer from booting at all?  Is Dell aware of this?

Hello!

Hey, Sorry to Barge. -.-' I'm having some trouble. My father works at Dell, but he can't help now. ^.^; I was wondering, Our Dell PC is running Window's 2003 Enterprise Edition. We use it for all our printers and Internet Connection, BUT, We just obtained a Dell Photo Printer 540 (Of Course...) and I am trying to intstall the Printer Driver, When after starting Install Wizard (From Auto-run on CD-Rom) It tells me I need Windows 2000 or Windows XP OS to Operate. I know what that means and all, but the question is I was wondering if I could download or alter anything in order to make it think, or know I am operating an compatible OS. Any input would be great, and an Honor. (By the way I'm 15, so I can understand everything.)

~Thanks alot, I appreciate it.

As far as I know there is no patch to make it work with another operating system. After reading several posts where other devices quit working for people after loading the 540 software I decided against it. I use mine by inserting a compact flash card in a card reader. I copy files I want to print to the flash card then insert it in the 540 printer.

Well I've been using it the same way, as a stand alone printer. I'm guessing there is no fix as of yet. Seeing that this is a speciality printer, you would think Dell would have worked out this bug... has anyone had success configuring this thing to work with another printer???

Well I did the same thing with my HP printer and that solution worked for about a week. Then it went back to all the jibberish again. I just installed the photo printer on my laptop and I'm keeping it seperated from my desktop and HP printer.

I installed the Dell Photo Printer 540 and ever since then, I've been having trouble with my HP Deskjet 960c. I reinstalled the software because it keeps on printing pages with two tiny smiley faces on it when I turn it on. I unplugged the printer and rebooted. Just when I thought my problems were fixed, it started doing the same thing. I thought I could use 2 printers as long as the HP Deskjet 960c was set as my default. Someone please help me!

Hey J

This just worked for me, I have an Epson C82 and just shut it down, installed the 540 software and voila. This sure beats installing the 540 and uninstalling every time I want to use the photo printer. When I read this it made so much sense, about the jibberish. It's a shame that Dell didn't do the research on these conflicts before they launched the printer, their people in India don't know this fix and it really is quite simple, I have been chasing my tail on this one since early January. I really hope this install holds out, I would hate to have to launch more verbal attacks (via email) on Dell!
