Since my last correspondence with you, I have been doing some "detective work". The communication problem is now resolved. I found out that I have two firewalls. After I disabled both firewalls, the computer was able to communicate with the printer.
However, the AIOC problem is still unresolved and not working. I was able to get though some more information about why it is not working. AIOC.exe has stopped working because of AppCrash. Application name - DLKKAIOx.exe and fault module is kernel 32.dll. I can get more information, if that will help, from the problem signature.
Do you have a clue on how to resolve this problem?
That sounds like an issue with the drivers not installed correctly. Since you have the firewalls turned off, then disconnect the printer, Run the patch until prompted and then restart your computer. Install the drivers first, then you'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).
As for firewalls, what two firewalls did you have on. It's good to use a firewall, but only one as they conflict with each other.
Rick - I followed your instructions: disconnected the printer, run the patch, and restarted. Then installed the drivers but I did not get the message that the printer is not connected. All I got was the "...files have been successfuly unzip and installed." or something like that.
The printer is still disconnected. What do I do next?
I still have to do the reinstallation of the drivers as you suggested above.
On your question on the firewalls, I have Windows Firewall that came with Vista and McAfee Internet Security. Actually, Windows Firewall was smart enough to have the Dell 920 printer as an exception and I did not really turn it off. It was the McAfee firewall that I had to disable before I could get a test print from the printer.
Thanks for your patience and hanging in there to give me help. I feel that the solution is near at hand and that I am just missing a small but important step.
To get to the point where you said that it will ask me to connect the computer, I had to go to the folder -- Dell/drivers/r153047/install/x86 and once that folder was open, I double click on "installgui". There I saw the screen asking me to connect the printer. Then it went to some installation steps until finally it stopped. And I got the message like "Printer Status Writing(?) Interface has stopped working" and an option for me to click "Check online for a solution and close the page" which I did but I did not get any solution on line. At this point, I stopped. Then I removed everything again by running the "patch" and this is where I am at.
Given the above, I would like to start all over again from the "Patch" but I would like to seek your advice since I think I arrived at the "connect the printer to the computer" stage only by my guessing. For instance, when I open the folder marked "Drivers", it has the following folders: App, common, drivers, install, pubs, and two files: set up (application) and set up(config settings). Is it possible that I should be double clicking on other files rather than "installgui" that I did?
What operating system are you using? 32-bit or 64-bit? I just tried to do a recap and see different driver numbers. Trying to make head and tail of this.
I am using Vista 32 bit and that is the one I have been downloading from the Dell driver's site.
What puzzles me is that the files are downloaded and extracted to my C drive but they just end in the folder. What should I do to "run" the driver or set them up on my computer?
Let me edit my thread to make it easier for you. Below are the instructions to install the printer on a Vista 32-bit system. Download the drivers using Internet Explorer and download in your browser. If you accidentally used the Dell Download manager, then...
First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.
Disconnect your printer.
Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch, a MUST on Vista machines, until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Install the Vista 32-bit drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)
As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.
Scanning
Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.
Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.
I really appreciate your taking the time to get me through this installation of the printer.
From your latest reply, I would like to seek some clarification of your statement "Download the drivers using Internet Explorer and download in your browser." What do you mean by "...download in your browser."? All along I have been using Internet Explorer for my internet browsing. And when I am asked to download, I simply click the "Download" button and the download process puts the files in a folder in my C drive. In this case, Dell folder and within the Dell folder, another folder called Drivers. Is this what is meant by "...download in your browser."?
For your information,I don't know if this is relevant or not, but when I download the drivers, I go through Dell website using the Service Tag number of my printer and there I select the Operating System of Vista 32 and then it gives me the list of recommended and optional downloads. There is were I see three items: Application, Driver, and the Patch. From this screen I download the drivers. I used to see a Download Manager before when selecting more than one download but I don't see that anymore.
What I am still confused is that after the downloads, NOTHING happens except for a screen saying that the files have been successfully extracted. So if I don't do anything, the screen just displays my desktop. At this point this is where I would expect to see "connect your printer" or to see a "run" button to click.
I just downloaded the latest version of Java per your suggestion. And I click a place to test whether it is working. I received a screen saying that Java is working OK. Now where do I ensure that I have the latest net.framework? My computer is set to receive automatic updates from Microsoft.

Some people have tried using Dell's Download Manager and then they have trouble downloading the drivers. It seems that to download drivers from Dell's website, Internet Explorer works the best. If the people do accidentally get the prompt to use Dell Download Manager, then it's recommended to do this. How to by-pass the Dell Download Manager
.net framework is in the Windows Updates, so if you look at Windows updates, you should be able to see if you have a download for it or not. I used to allow automatic updates from Microsoft but lately with the BSOD's people are getting from them. I have mine set for notify and then I sometimes wait a week before installing them. That way if there is a problem with one of the updates, I actually don't get to install it as they pull it from the download list. NEVER let Windows Updates install drivers for devices, like printers, etc. Do these ONLY if you have a problem.
Service Tag number for you computer will give you the drivers you need for your operating system.
I have not given up on the problem but I have been sick for the past week and so was not able to work on this problem.
Before I proceed to continue with the steps that you have given above, I would like to share this bit of info, whether in case it is relevant.
Lately, I have been getting the following error messages:
a) Softthink scheduler -- A fatal error has occurred 0x1900001000000F.
b) ST Service Scheduling has stopped working.
In both cases, I am given the option either to report it to Microsoft or ignore it. I always elect to report it to Microsoft but I have not received any solutions to the error.
I have searched these error messages in the internet and the solution they propose is to uninstall Dell DataSafe. But I hesistated to do this for I read one who did the uninstall, and his computer became worse.
Do you use Dell DataSafe? I uninstalled it on the computers in my house as we don't use it. Start, control panel, programs and features. I don't even have the Dell Support Center installed. I have no problems with mine, except if I go to use Windows 7, because I have mismatched RAM, it causes the graphics to have lines. I am currently using Vista 64-bit .

You probably installed the Dell Download Manager.
