Dell Printer will Not Use Black Cartridge when Printing From Computer
I am using a Dell 964 with series 5 ink cartridges.
I just bought a new black cartridge. It's the official Dell stuff, etc. After installing it, I got an on-screen prompt asking if I wanted to use the black cartridge, which I absent-mindedly dismissed. Now my computer will simply not use the black cartridge. When I check ink levels, my computer shows that the black ink is full. When I use printer-based functions like photocopying and aligning the cartridges, the printer uses the black cartridge. However, when I try to print from my computer, it will simply not print with the black ink cartridge. Instead, it uses the color ink to create black. To be clear, both the printer and the computer know that there is a full black cartridge in there; the computer simply will not use it to print.
Here's what I've already tried, based on my Internet research:
- Aligning cartridges
- Cleaning cartridges
- Going through the replace cartridge tutorial to see if that would "trigger" something
- Removing and then replacing both color and black cartridges
- Removing color cartridge entirely. This simply resulted in blank pages.
- Unplugging and replugging the printer.
- Going into the printer's properties to search for a way to reset or restore defaults.
I would very much appreicate some help. Thank you in advance.

HeidiT,
I don't use Microsoft Word, at home, only at work. I use Open Office, like Microsoft Word, but FREE.
Try checking your printer margins.Removing the header and footers, unless you need them. Maybe try making the cell size a little. It's probably going to be hit and miss. There is usually issues when using Microsoft work to these printers. Next you'll tell me the colors don't match what is on your screen(heard this one before, too!)

HeidiT,
You need to check your printer prefreneces.
To remove all error messages the printer is getting, unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick for 60 seconds.
Start, control panel, printers, your printer, printer preferences, avanced, more options. Make sure complete-a-print boxes are unchecked.
I never saw that error message on my Dell 964 Printer.

Thank you, Rick! You were dead-on right about the complete-a-print box. Fabulous.
Surprisingly, a new problem printer problem has arisen.
Now that I'm printing an excell file with the black cartridge, the top half of a lot of the lines are being cut off. This problem did not occur when the document was being printed with the color cartridge. This problem occurs even when I enlarge the text or paste the cells into Word and try to print from there. This problem does NOT occur when I print a document that does not contain cells, so I think it may be related to the existence of the cells. I've tried both cleaning and aligning the cartridges, whiich did not help.
I know you already helped me once, and I'm so grateful. I wouldn't ask another question so quickly if I weren't working against a deadline for printing these documents.
Thank you, and thanks again.
