I followed the reccommendations you refered to and the patch to remove all printer software worked fine but after I downloaded the drivers and opened the zipped file the normal Dell printer screen came up as did the one when I used the driver disk, I clicked to install for one printer, the screen went off and nothing else happened. I tried twice and again after the Dell printer install screen disappeared nothing else happened.
Anything else you can suggested would be appreciated.
Did you reinstall the operating system? If yes, did you install the Dell System Software (if applicable) and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order
Start with the Dell System Software and the chipset drivers and follow the list.
What is the model number of the XPS? If you did not recently install/reinstall the operating system, I would still consider installing the Dell System Software and the chipset drivers. There may also be drivers for the usb ports.
Is your computer in English or another language? This is an XP 32-bit system, correct? XP 64-bit would have different drivers.
Rick This is a Dell XPS w/ Win XP pre-loaded on it. Never encountered a problem like this before and must admit I am at a loss. Thanks for your continued efforts in this attempt to get the printer software set-up/loaded, Tim
Since Microsoft removed all of Windows Updates for XP, I suggest you read THIS ARTICLE and create a slipstream disk with Service Pack 3. Download Service Pack 3 before it's removed. Then if you need to repair/reinstall, you can have all the updates on the disk. You can even include drivers, if my memory serves me correctly. If it doesn't include drivers, download and install Wndrvrbckup Backup Utilities
I would try posting in the Dell Desktop Forum and see if they can help with the usb port issue.
The computer is a Dell model # XPS 630I, runing XP Pro, build 5.1.2600 SP3, 32 bit.
My concern with re-installing the XP OS is that I will end up with SP 2 and not be able to obtain all the last security updates for XP since Microsoft no longer supports XP!

Tim,
First run Delete Print Jobs to remove stuck print job(s) from the queue, then restart your computer. Then follow the instructions located at...
Dell 944 All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

Tim,
Your model may have known usb port issues.
