Hi I just spent time with a "chat" tech person about this. It did me no good.  The other messages in regards to this error message makes me think that there is no solution. If you fix it, please let me know. Thanks, Kim

I just fixed my printer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The directions they give you on the tech support or wherever don't explain it well enough.  I took the black cover loose so I could get better access to the cartridge case and that encoder strip.  I used a small mirror to see that there is a groove on the back of the cartridge case for the encoder strip to slide through.  I could not get the encoder strip in that groove without taking the encoder strip off.  Looking at the printer, the left side of the encoder strip is hooked in solid and the right side is hooked in with a wire clip that acts as a spring.  I pulled the strip to the left and unhooked it on that side.  I found that my encoder strip had a "F" and an arrow pointing downward on the left side.  I had to unhook it from the right side so the encoder strip was out of the printer.  I then fed the encoder strip through the back of the printer cartdridge case slot.  I hooked the right side and then the left side.  This was not a real easy task and small hands are a plus.  I can feel that the encoder strip now stays very close to the cartridge case.

My printer seems to work ok now, if you need any more directions on this specific repair you can e-mail me at joerenders@hotmail.com.    Good luck

I have the same problem on my A940.   Problem: ink can get caked on the metal bar on which cartridges slide back and forth, causing Cartridge Stall hardware error 0502.  Solution:  dampen a soft clean cloth with water and rub it back and forth along the metal bar.  I then used a very small amount of WD-40, which I sprayed onto another piece of clean cloth, and rubbed it on the metal bar, hoping it would make it more slippery.  WORKS GREAT - no further error 0502 in several months!
